Mountain Biking

Sample size of two, and you may already have your own experience, but stabilisers on my son's bike really made the process of learning to ride a lot more difficult.

For my daughter we did without and she was up and riding in about 20 minutes.

I will say that doing it in a big flat space is probably the key. An empty car park is best. Riding in a straight line is harder than doing a wobbly circle.

Nice to see Nukeproof back up-and-running. Prices aren't what they once were, but we were utterly spoiled by the buying power of Wiggle/CRC and the transferable lifetime warranties on the new range should be industry standard. Hopefully they can occupy the space left by the demise of YT and give people sensibly designed bikes that work in UK conditions, with great spec at reasonable prices.

Hopefully the new owners aren't going to overstretch themselves with the configuration tool that is proposed, but as long as it's genuinely BTO and they aren't buying masses of stock in masses of different colours, it should be a sound business model and give consumers what they want.

I miss my Dissent... if I can get a white frame sorted out, I'll be back aboard a Nukeproof next year!

I did really fancy a Mega prior to them going under. £4k is too much for a scrub like me, though. Hopefully they'll flesh out the configurator so I can downgrade some parts and make it more in line with my ability :D

Still enjoy my Nukeproof Scout, even with having an all singing all dancing Atherton. The Scout is what really rekindled my love of mountain biking.
My Scout RS with its subtle upgrades here and there is the most overall “fun” I think I can have on any of my bikes. It’s not going flat out like my heavily modded Status nor is it as easy in any condition as my 177 but the fact it makes you work, has a rigid rear wnd that bounces all over the place and makes you choose your lines and improve makes it an addictive bike that’s for sure. I can’t wait until the weather lets up, I may have to go out on it a few more times before the weather gets sucky.

It’s a good bit bigger than the balance bike so the training wheels are on but in a position where they are not on the floor when riding, they’ll be coming off pretty quickly I hope.

Remove the stabilisers.
As somebody who has spent time dealing with kids on bikes, all they do is restrict learning and promote bad habits, making the whole learning process take longer.

As cheesyboy has said, big open area is best, although I'd favour a nicely maintained grass area that isn't too hard to pedal on, as there will be tumbles and grass is far more forgiving than tarmac.
Ideally start somewhere with a bit slope, so that they can get used to balancing on the new bike, before introducing the pedalling bit.

I’m glad they sorted the customers out who got shafted. That’s a top take on management, you can tell it’s gone back to its roots based on that ethic alone. Such a shame the business caved in to be in that position in the first place.

@SDK^ Have you looked at Paul’s cycles for a DH/park bike? They have an absolute stinking deal on one at the moment but only have it in SM or XL. I’m not sure how tall your lad is and if that would be a fit but take a look.

It’s a 200mm up front and 180 in the rear so bike park/DH like and would be a mullet.

Thanks for the heads up on this, but he REALLY wants the Marin so I'm holding out for that :)

I don't know anything about bikes but...
I've been offered a giant talon 29er by a family member for £150. Apparently has hardly been ridden before being put in the shed as he didn't like it but looks like the back wheel has a buckle in it..
Would one of these be worth £150?

Its a half decent mtb for £150, bargain really depending on the condition.

Edit didn't notice the buckle. Probably get another for similar price elsewhere

How bad is the buckle?

while not a pro like the rest of the people here ,i would say there is not a problem with that `buckle`
mine has a similar wobble and works fine for my `amateur` use :)

got my mtb back today from a service
new chain,cassette,gear cable
£177 it is only a cheap Chinese e-bike and had not been serviced before, chain was way to stretched so had worn the cassette too much.they tweaked the back wheel too as it had a slight wobble like above
seemed reasonable to me,what do you lot think?
