Mountain Biking

Have you tried the mavity tyres from Schwalbe? I've not used the Radial version but ran Super mavity Magic Mary's on my DH bike for years. Solid tyres and hold up well at Dyfi and Antur Stiniog (which I'd argue is harsher on tyres than Dyfi).

Saturday coming is officially new bike day :D
I find the opposite, zero punctures at Stiniog and I go there a lot. Multiple punctures at Dyfi.
Id say the mavity tyres are more Enduro oriented, the SuperDH is what you want for uplift and has a lot more puncture resistance. The Radials are at the minute a little of a compromise when it comes to DH.

Awesome what are you getting? My Amflow should arrive this Saturday!
The new Orbea Rallon enduro

Not sure on the latest version or the Radial tyres but sidewall wise there was barely, if any difference between the Super mavity and Super DH. Super DH where thicker under the tread though. Maybe they've changed though in recent years, not bought a new tyre in over two years now.

I've never had a puncture at Dyfi and only one or two at Stiniog before they smoothed the trails a fair bit. I was basing my judgement on the fact that Black Powder and Y Du are or where pretty much rock and slate all the way down.

Dont think id be using a £15 bike for my type of riding

Dyfi has a downlift too!

got fed up of eating these maxxis tyres. Ive done 3 rears (DH casing) since October. Bought a pair of Kryptotals will see how they fair at revs next week

You had the same experience as I did last Friday it seems, in first 3 runs took out 2 DHR DD Casing and a Assegai DH casing, all big slashes to do hope of plugging. Ended up throwing toys out of pram and buying Kryptotals from the shop and had no more issues over several days riding there.

Had been meaning to move away form Maxxis as both me and the wife seemed to been cutting the sidewalls a lot in the last year so forced my hand!

Both bikes arrived today and have been built up and tested, all in good working order and ready for a proper ride out tomorrow. I did really want the SC Vala but there are no medium frames available in the spec I wanted so I would have to wait for the new model due in a few months, plus the sale on the Amflow and a bit of negotiated discount meant that it was better option at this time value wise.

Just bought a Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3 2026 as my starter bike for some mountain biking action. Not looking to do anything serious but some calm and easy forest trails. How often people service their bikes?

It depends on how caked it all gets.

With the nasty muddy weather we have had I do my pivot bearings, headset (+ where required BB) and wheel bearings every couple of months. I clean the forks, shock and dropper after each ride as well as the jockey wheels, cassette, chain ring and chain after most heavy runs.

Forks see a lower service every couple of months or so and a major service to them as well as the shock once a year because it’s expensive and I’m too lazy to do it.

When it’s dry, it just gets a basic wash down and the whole lot sees a full going over every couple of months or so.

I don’t mess about bleeding or changing fluid in the brakes too often as I’m finding that the Hopes and shimanos don’t really need it BUT the Magura brakes seems to cook fluid so get a flush and fresh oil as and when needed.

Depends on so many things. Conditions, how well the pivot points are designed. My current bike one a year is actually looking more than enough for pivots, fork I'll do once a year, shock maybe every two.
Wheel bearings, again depends on the hub, I don't service mine I just replace the bearings as and when it can be many years.
Dropper posts I just keep them clean, not worth paying money for preventative maintenance when it's cheaper to buy a new one instead.

Im planning on having a 4 day trip to bike park wales sometime in the next 3 months but want to take my own ebike with me, will be travelling via trains had anyone been before and know if there are hotela nearby that will let me take my ebike in and charge it?

Normally use the premier inn, not sure about the ebike though, phone them and ask.

Contis held up at revs. That is a young mans bike park. Some of the lines are pretty nuts.

love the trail naming convention. A friend even got a shot of me actually on the bike.

If you are pretty new to it all, and if you have a local store that does free service assessments, have it assessed every 6 months.

If you wait for a year plus until everything is worn, the cost in labour and parts quickly grows to the point your questioning why you bought a bicycle in the 1st place.

Trek hub bearings and freehub assemblies can wear pretty quickly, especially if you use cleaning products on the bicycle often.

Spokes are another area that can on occasions snap.

And keep an eye on the rear brake hose where it enters the frame, they come set up for EU riding, UK set up puts the hose at an odd angle and it can kink at the frame.

Brakes are worth having bled every year or year and a half, if the fluid comes out like black coffee you left it a little long.

Dropper post is not worth servicing unless you have it done before it wears. As once it develops slop that slop stays.

If service work climbs to over 50% of the bicycle retail value, your probably leaving the service too late or storing it in the canal.

I went to gisburn forest yesterday but it started to absolutely chuck it down and i got soaked through to the point i started shivering if i stayed still for too long so didnt try any of the trails and just cycled around the main road

Took the train to long preston train station and cycled to gisburn forest which is around 7 miles, on the way back the trains to that station got cancelled due to flooding so had to do an additional 14 mile bike ride to skipton train station

Was shivering on the train ride back, downloaded 3 weather forcast apps since but ill go better prepared with full waterproofs next time

Do want to visit again sometime in better weather
