Mountain Biking

Built some new wheels up last week, finished tensioning them on Friday evening so took them out for a little shake down ride on Saturday.

I9 Torch hubs, CX-Ray spokes and Nox Teocalli rims, fitted to my Turner Burner....Need to take a new photo of the bike.

Loved the higher engagement of the new rear hub for the technical climbing, trials-esque moves you need to do on some of the local trails.

Well, pretty sure I've broken a rib in that crash at the weekend. Will be going to the minor injury unit tomorrow to get it checked over. That'll be me not riding properly for a while :(
Have been looking at getting some proper pads/armour now. Anyone got experience with something like this?
Initially friends had recommended just getting knee/elbow pads, but after this crash the majority of the pain is the back of my shoulders and ribs. I'll be getting some shorts with padding on the hips too.

Supercow - that video looks ridiculously quick  Great work!

I'm looking at some new brakes, and I can get XT for £110 from CRC or Zee from bike-Discount for £120. Are the Zee worth the extra £10?

Only used SLX and Zee brakes, but the Zee brakes are better than the SLXs I ran without a doubt. Not sure on the difference from the XT though, the XT are lighter than the Zees IIRC?

The Zees will no doubt have extra stopping power though, but then I doubt most people would encounter a problem with stopping power on the XTs.

Remember you have to swap the levers around, if you buy from Bike-discount if you didn't already know.

Yeah I believe the XTs are lighter, and I guess I'll never get to the ability levels that mean XTs are causing me a problem haha!

I actually forgot about having to change the levers round from Bike-discount.. I might as well go with the XT brakes, not like I can complain at them for £110 anyway!

Shimano lever swapping is easy.

You will have to cut the hoses when you get the new brakes anyway so changing the lever over will just be part of the process.

Zee are 4 pot while XT are 2 pot. Nothing wrong with 2 pot, will work with anyone who isnt a world cup downhiller to be fair. 4 pot will just be extra power.

My Pikes finally come back after 3 weeks. While I was on holiday in Newquay though so I've only just opened them.

There brand new 2015 ******. Also as A bonus I sent my old pikes without a Maxle in the hope Sram would send me another and they did :D . Also got a service kit and Rock Shox pump. Also got 4 tokens now as I took my 2 out and they sent 2 more.

Old ******:

The finish is different on the crown, far more matt than the glossy style before. Also they've made the nut on the air side bigger so you can get a socket on better to put in tokens. The old style air nut was very shallow and needed a very flat socket to take off.

Does this mean my 2 year warranty on the forks starts again? As they are a completely new fork.

Got 2 tokens back in , steerer cut and new star nut installed. Then Fitted them and set them up to how I had my old ones which is 80psi, reboud 2 clicks from slowest and low speed compression 2 clicks from max.

Done some measurements aswell, just wanted to see how it compares to everyone else if you dont mind:

From Centre of BB to floor: 345mm
From Centre of Bar to floor: 1045mm
From Axle To Axle: 1200mm
From Centre of Seatpole to centre of steerer: 580mm

Does anyone ride around the North somerset/Somerset Area? I live in Weston-super-Mare and looking for people to ride with.. I've heard there is a trail in Cheddar and the Quantocks..

Looking for a set of forks for my retro build up. Looking for something quite plush, 4 inches of travel and under 100.
Is it worth going retro? Frame is 1-1/8 and it looks like a lot of period forks can be had for the sub-100 bracket.
Riding is mainly trails and a bit of road to and from. I think the problem I will have with retro forks is the availability of lock-out functions?
Any ideas?

Survived BPW. Did all the reds and a couple of the black further down the mountain. Great fun despite a big off on the a470 jumps. Cuts/grazes/bruises all over my back, sides, arms and legs. Pics to potentially follow! :p

Think I'll be investing in some pads!

I was there that day too! My first up lift, was one of the best day's of my life!!! Booked again for the 13th of September.

Begining to progress a little with my jumping now, should be hitting some big ones before the end of the year.

Also noticed how thin my bar's are... 100% gonna by wider bars in the very near future!

Oh and goggles.... need goggles!

Not sure I want to post the photos of me on the A470, I always manage to pull an absolutely ridiculous face when they take the photos. When I nailed the jump in front of the photographer I look like a world class gurner! It's my "oh crap I'm going too fast" face :p

Saw a nurse today. Looks that I do have a broken rib. Although they've not done an x-ray to say for sure (they tend not to as it doesn't matter - treatment is the same anyway)
No riding for a few weeks whilst I hope it heals up quickly :(

As mention in my previous post, anyone got any experience with wearing actual body armour like the 661 Pressure Suits for trail riding?
