After trying a few out I ended up going with a Peaty.

Yes. Yes it is.

However… I get to be covered in grime and not get heat stroke so I’m also absolutely fine with it. It’s when winter hits that I’ll be a bit miffed as I’m not sure I can be doing with that

Hard tail Mantra is up and running for the grime time and the Status doesn’t have much in the way of moving parts so I think I’ll still be out a couple of times a month at least getting some laps in somewhere or another.

You have plans for the “off” season?

I was talking earlier about buying a trek marlin 7 for cardio and going to the gym, ended up cancelling that order and went with a Scott scale 930 2026 for £819, after riding only e bikes for 4-5 months i'm surprised by how unfit I actually am, put a DMR sweeper bar on it (stock bar felt terrible) and going to put some 29x2.4 magnatols on (the rekon race feels really slippery on wet surfaces) and some decent pedals.

I still try and keep up my cycling in the winter months, the only thing that would really stop me is snow but I do a mixture of cardio cycling and MTB (XC/Trail)

I keep cycling right through winter, fresh snow is surprisingly grippy on a trail. I only draw the line at compressed snow/ice. Endura do a great set of winter trousers and jackets I've been out in -6 to -8c without feeling cold added bonus the mud is frozen so you don't get covered in it. I also enjoy the trail riding at night makes it feel like you are going faster than you are.

On the road I swap to a winter bike with mud guards and all season tyres to save my good bike as the winter salt/rain destroys bearings I'm lucky to get through a winter without replacing the bottom bracket and a couple winters out the wheel bearings.

What kind of trails do you ride at night? am assuming you wear a head light and a light or 2 on your bike

Mainly the same ones as in the summer so the 7stanes, Golfie at Innerlethian and the Pentlands has a few good routes I'd do at night.

I was at Peebles last weekend and did the Glentrees blue and red route at night would normally have done Innerlethian aswell however a lot of trails are now shut for tree felling.

I use an Exposure Six pack on the bike and a Diablo helmet light with an external battery to match the run time of the Six pack. Gives me 3 hours of night riding, great lights pretty old now I got them in 2018 or 2019 but not needed a reason to upgrade them as they are bright enough.

Finally move to North Wales is happening so time for a DH bike. Was pretty set on a Atherton S200 but can only afford the base model. Anyone ridden the Propain Rage? Can get it spec'd with Ohlins suspension for same price as s200.3 so hard to look past.

Like a lot of its contemporaries, they are comparatively short bikes - highly recommend an extended test ride/demo on anything of that era as you may find yourself between sizes.

I ended up with a Gambler of that era of frames and had to size-up to an XL to get the feel I wanted.

Worth looking at the previous-gen of the Demo if you are set on Ohlins - but there's a lot more to a DH bike than just the brand of suspension hanging off the frame.

Saracen Myst

I really wanted an S200, still do but the Saracen Myst was such good value. Hasn't dissapointed me.

Can you not get S200 and then fit parts on discount, plenty of previous year models of forks for sale. Go super budget drivetrain as well to save costs where they don't matter.

I have been tempted by a DH bike but i only visit bike parks about twice a year. I'd be tempted to try single speed, or at least one of the Chinese drivetrains (minus cranks)
Or second hand, join our Atherton facebook group plenty go up for sale there was an S200 a few weeks ago that had never been ridden.

Have a look at the airdrop slacker. Things are bomb proof!! British bikes too. Purely a 27.5 bike though..
Yea, have ridden a Slacker, fun bike but don't fancy 27.5", rumour a mullet is coming but I doubt it!

Demo'd a myst a few times, it is on the list, probably give one a go in Caersws once I've moved

Thats a option, in fairness not difficult to upgrade Rockshox Base to ultimate so always an option if I found it lacking. Plan is to go single speed as I never change gear in bike parks.

Always bought bikes from brands local to me (Have 4 Birds in house as was near Eversley when they where there) so Atherton will likely win as will be down the road from the factory

Don't forget with an Atherton a free visit to Dyfi every year, not much on value but it's nice, Okie you'll get to ride with Gee, Dan, Rachel and Charlie. I ride with Charlie for about 30 seconds then I couldn't see him anymore lol.

Went to havok bike park yesterday in todmorden on my cube e hardtail, i used to struggle going up on the fireroad with my old bosch gen 4 but on my new bosch gen 5 I can get up it in turbo mode (heart rate still gets to around 160+), and then you barely use any battery going down the trail cause its all downhill so you get quite a few runs. was fun going up whilst everyone else had to slowly walk up.

I went to gisburn yesterday I think its the best trail centre i've done so far did struggle a bit on the 'Simons Swamp' section of it on my e-hardtail though (lots of rocks boulders) and 'bottoms beck' was a bit tricky but the flowy sections were loads of fun, thinking of hiring a FS electric the next time i go to see what the difference is like

the biggest thing I struggle with is holding my handlebar over bumpy terrain do I need some thinner grips? (have DMR deathgrip thick on them)
