Do the more expensive mats make much of a difference? Atm ive got a cheap soft one. But im getting my new desk next week and going to get a new keyboard and mouse and possibly a mouse mat if indeed they do make a difference for gaming.

Yes they do, although its up you how much you spend.

I use a £15 Steelseries S&S which is rather large and works well. It allows me to adjust my aim in a much more finetuned way than just with the desk surface which grips the mouse too much so it will occasionaly make me overshoot.

There's also smooth and textured mousepads, some people like to have their mouse feel as though its gliding whereas some people like to feel like they have more control over their mouse so they use a textured pad.

Smooth pads are made from plastic, glass or metal and most cloth pads are textured.

Also before choosing a mousepad you should find out what mousepad is reccomended for your mouse, as some mice won't track properly on some mousepads. For example I have used a saitek rat 9 in the past which had trouble tracking with a lot of mousepads I tried.

I would sya mouse mats matter if the material is different...i.e ive gone form those old soft ones to a metal one and I love it.

However the different from cheap metal one to expensive metal one, worth it? probably not.

I am a bit fan of soft cloth mouse mats for comfort, but I use it all day long & also have a wrist rest.

I hate using tables etc as they can be unpredictable.

Problem is you have to find a mouse mat that both works for you and works with your mouse before you see any real improvement from a generic setup.

I swear by the combination of Zowie FK + Zowie N-RF2 mat but that mouse mat absolutely sucks with just about any other mouse but an absolute dream to use with the FK giving exactly the right level of glide and friction to be both effortless and precise.

Had a look at one of the zowies cant remember which one it was though they do look decent

I have the Razer exactmat, its metal with 1 smooth side for gaming and one 'gritty' side for things like picture editing I assume. I only use the smootjh side and ive had it for years. Keyboard I use the discontinued Saitek Eclipse II illuminated KB, love it best KB ive eevr had you can find em on ebay every now and then. And mouse I use Logitech MX518, again best mouse ive ever had and ive owned a few razers before. The MX518/G400 is arguably one of the best mice ever made and its cheap!

I have a Raxer Sphex mouse mat, it's very thin and sticks to the desk. Then I have a Mx518 with skatez on it, glides like nothing else, it's like it's on ice :)

I have a Razer Goliathus mat, bought mainly for the size so it fitted my desk well, currently has my kb + mouse on with loads of room to spare and does make the difference compared to my old mat

I use Razor's Iron Clad mat.

It's over-priced like everything Razor sells and the only reason I bought it is because it's easy to wash.

It's smooth alright, my only complaints is that it's over priced and that the paint/plastic of the mouse that I use (Razor Mamba) rubs off on to the mat, it's easy washed off though.

Going get a mx518 after the hype of it on herr i expected it be quite abit didnt realise it was that cheap....can you get other designs of it? Can only find one that looks like someones beat it with a hammer....i like the loom but wouldnt mind a black one or something

Wont let me edit messages on my phone :s so got post another :s what are your thoughts on the g400 i think it was? Might bump my budget up a little and get one if its a good improvement over the 518
