Help pls!

Just did a graphics card upgrade...PRIOR to that, I went into the add/remove programs bit under control panel and chose to uninstall the Nvidia drivers...system asked my whether I wanted to remove ALL Nvidia drivers or only the display drivers...I chose ALL by mistake!!... (mobo is a Nforce 4 Asus)..

anyway, I slotted in my new Radeon 4850 and rebooted.. system goes to windows log-in screen but mouse isn't working... I tried using a PS/2 mouse but that doesn't work either... tried using my USB mouse in different ports but it doesn't work ... tried using a PS/2 adaptor with my USB Mouse but it doesn't work... rebooted many times...

My USB keyboard works since I can get into the system set up...

Just can't log into windows since I can't make the pointer move and enter the password!!..

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Try pressing TAB at the logon, it may go to the relevant empty box where you type your pass word etc. But you may have to press it numerous times to get to the correct part.

Hopefully it will log in then and install the driver there...hopefully...Try that first though.

Tab should work. I've done that myself. Keep an eye out for the dotted line round the box as you tab along.

I put the Intel inf update on my system and it knocked out all the usb ports so I was the same, keyboard and no mouse.

Trying to get into control panel and put things back right be reinstalling the right drivers was a nightmare with just a keyboard and it took me ages.

also why would the mouse not work in the PS/2 port? (tried a PS/2 mouse as well)

the PS/2 port works for the keyboard though...!!!

whats going on!

Well for PS/2 there is a port for each device and you can't use a mouse in the keyboard port.

Tabing should be working fine on the login box I use it all the time.

If you load Windows into safemode do you have a working mouse then?

there doesn't seem to be a setting disabling PS2 ports in my BIOS... the keyboard PS/2 port works but my mouse PS/2 doesnt... I tried the mouse in its own PS/2 port..

Even safemode on windows doesn't work for the mouse

I just booted from my windows setup CD to reinstall but when it gets to the 'select a partition screen' it says 'unknown disk. cannot install in this space' for both my hard drives ...if I try to proceed or delete the partition, I get a BSOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BIOS shows everything as ok though (i.e. all drives present etc)

What login prompt is it?

Does the keyboards numlock / capslock buttons work etc?

If its a standard login, and your keyboard is working, tab will work. If it don't then the keyboard isn't working for some reason...once at the login prompt.

Have you tried 'last known good configuration' as well? It's worth a shot.

If it's like this:
windows-xp-welcome-screen.jpg

The tab button will work.

If it's like this:
windows-xp-logon-screen.jpg

The tab button will work after you press 'ctrl, alt, delete'.

Ensure that "USB Legacy support" or "USB Keyboard Support" is enabled in the BIOS.

You could check the above as well?

One other thing you could do is bootup with no keyboard or mouse installed....then shut down with the power button by pressing it once, or holding it down if you HAVE to. Then turn it on with the keyboard and mouse connected, to see if it re-installs....but I have a felling this won't work.

Can't remember if I said this or not, but you could try doing a repair install with the boot cd...?

IIRC you can't hot swap or plug in a ps/2 mouse. I think you have to switch off, plug it in, then switch on again.

Hope you fix it!

I've hotswapped a PS2 keyb and mouse on my old PC and it worked fine! Had to do it lots of times whilst rewiring my desk, and I hate shutting down :D

Ah but your system already knows the mouse is there so disconnecting and reconnecting works.

Try booting you pc up without a ps2 mouse and then plug one in after windows is loaded and see if it then works. ;)

tried switching off, reconnecting devices etc
also ensured legacy support was on..

in the end, i got bios to default settings and tried reinstalling windows...this time the setup software did recognise my HDD... currently doing a fresh install... mouse pointer seems to be working... must have been the darn windows that buggered up! :-/

hence why I said turn it on, let it boot, turn it off...THEN put the keyboard and mouse back in.
