Hi all

A few questions about the above. I'm currently on a 16mb O2 LLU connection which has been great for me but I feel like more speed, so I am pondering a switch to VM 50mb.

1) We used to have VM DigiTV so we have the cable entering the living room, if I want the router in a completely different place(I don't use WIFI) is that ok? Will the engineer do the cabling for me?

2) Currently being on O2 ADSL2, I need to cancel this rather than request a MAC code - is this a case of just calling up and cancelling(I wish to keep my BT phoneline). Also I have been with o2 for over 12 months.

3) Can someone give a quick outline of the FUP on the 50MB package? I'm not quite sure I understand the VM site.

4) How do people find the speeds on newsgroups?

Thanks guys.

1) not sure if they will use the old cable or run in new, if they do what sort of distance is the router area from the living room box ?

2) is there a reason you need to cancel over requesting a mac code ?

3) from what i can see currently on the site it says there isn't anything on xxl (50mb), but have seen mention of here on people getting letters etc if there unlucky or in heavy usage areas.

4) from what i've seen on here they can vary, port number changes sometimes help but have seen mention that it doesnt help others.

The MAC is only needed if migrating between ISPs that use the phone line - if virgin are going to use their own cable then you'll need to outright cancel o2.

I'd wait for the virgin connection to be fully set up before doing this - at the worst, you'll end up paying for two connections for a month; that said if you're in a position to afford VM 50meg, you're likely able to swing an extra £10/15 for the o2 connection.

Will VM impose a FUP when the flagship service changes to the 100mbit service? Seeing as the 50mbit one will not be top of the range anymore

More than likely. That being said their FUP / limits are designed to stop you battering it through the peak periods - they encourage you to do the bulk downloads in the wee small hours.

Guess by the merits of having that, they can provide a decent speed for streaming / browsing.

Well I took the plunge. Looks like the install is next Wednesday, now I need to cancel my O2 Broadband.

The original cable junction box going into the house is in the living room behind the TV, I actually need the cable to be run into the hallway (next door) as I have CAT5 wiring going from the hallway..

I don't think the distance for the cabling would make a difference mate, when they installed my router I had it put in at the complete opposite side of the house and they didn't complain at all. The cable runs on the exterior of the property and they used all new cable.

From what I can recall they get paid a standard price per service so any extra time spent on your install won't mean any extra money for them but treat them well and they usually treat you the same.

Make sure you get some nice tea bags and a packet of chocolate hob nobs!

Mini VM Review#

Been with VM for over ten years now, was Telewest before that. I have beta tested the 100MB line and now am back again with the 50MB line. Their customer service is, IMO, the best in the business. I've had them re-cable the position of the cables when I had their TV package installed and got their guy to move my modem to under the stairs where mu server is.. no charge or complaint. Their line has gone down a couple of times over the years with but compared with my ADSL line, it is up more than the BT line which has had several migrations from AOHELL, BT, Pipex, and lastly TalkTalk. I finally bit the bullet last year and ditched the ADSL so only have VM now.

Also I don't pay them every month I don't do direct debit, so I pay them every two months on average and they only cut me off if I don't pay after that which is more than fair enough. Their system says that it will take upto 24 hours to put me on again, but an apology for late payment when talking to an English human always results in instant reconnection. Tech support sees you talking to Mr Patel, but the 50MB/100MB lines have a different call centre and you get transferred instantly to a normal English call centre.. in the midlands.

Finally, the glimpse of the 100MB service has changed the way I store my data, I've seen the future and I'm not buying hard disks like I used to: I have a fairly large media server (20TB) which was set up as two 10TB RAID 0 arrays so I lose half the storage.. not anymore, now I have a 20TB RAID5 solution and use online back up with Virgin as its free and comes with the package. You also get 100 digital photos printed for free every month.

Even on the 50MB I get around 5MB sec UP, sometimes more, which has taken just over a week to get everything in the cloud. The backup software is free although its clunky, and won't allow an install to a server platform. And it's not as finished as LiveDrive which is only £5 per month unlimited data, which I have also subscribed to but no need for wastefull RAID0 arrays now, I put my faith in the cloud...

BTW, I am not affiliated with VM in ANY way, but it's not hard to get the arse ripped out of you for crappy customer service with ADSL, and I've tried most of the others and VM are miles ahead... the only thing I wish they would introduce is static IP.. I've moaned enough about this so maybe they will listen :)

ARGH!!!

Apparently the muppet installer that came refused to run the wire into our hallway as the cable was already set and ready in the living room from previous VM subscription!! I was at work at the time but had someone looking over it...called up virgin and have had to file an complaint.

What else can I do? Why did I just pay an install fee?

Had to call and raise a complaint to VM - anyone know how this process works? Also on speedtest.net i get about 49mbit which is right but when downloading a file i seem to top out at 20mbit. I have tried files from a blueyonder server and also astraweb. Any ideas?
