Moving in with the missus for the first time

Well ive decided to change from BT 76MB net and evening/weekend calls for £36 to virgin media 30mb net and weekend calls for £28 a month but the first 6 months is £21 meaning around £90 saving which pays for car tax

I doubt I'd see a diff between 76mb and 30mb net considering I've never used above 10mb ever.

Thought I'd share my budget as well:

Rent: £500
Council Tax: ~£70
Water: £42
Electricity: ~£100
Groceries (that includes toiletries and anything else): £200
Work allowance(eating lunch at cantene): £80
Bus ticket: £65
Broadband: £22.50
Phone: £32
Student Load: £69

I think this is all.
Comes out at £1180 per month
Note that everything that;s not set, like electricity and groceries and work allowance, I've used a value that's above what I normally spend.
Cook every night at home, eat my breakfast at home and take a sandwich with me at work for breakfast there.

Wait, £42 a month on water!!! Do you have an olympic size swimming pool or something? It should be around £10 a month for one person.

I think you're probably forgetting the wastage charge as well as the supply. It cost us ~£6.85 a month for supply and £22.70 for wastage. I'm pretty sure our area is one of the cheaper areas too last time I checked (West Sussex)

No that's including sewerage charges, see here: http://www.ccwater.org.uk/server.php?show=nav.388

EDIT- That calculator actually significantly overestimates use.

Heh...

By that estimate, if I was on metered water then I would be paying ~£140 per year instead of ~£430.

Of course I can't switch to a meter because it's a rented house (I guess a fixed-rate is more attractive if the landlord wants to market the property to families?).

Your estimated annual water consumption is 81 cubic metres

Water £95.58
Water Standing Charge £30.24

Sewerage £109.19
Sewerage Standing Charge £44.25

SWD charge -£42.47

Total Estimated Bill £236.79

seems to be a rough bill idea for me then

Forgive me for being a little...slow.

But how would you know if it's metered? Never lived in a house thats my own before, only house shares/family

If it's metered, you will have a water meter (measuring your water usage). If not, then you'll be on a fixed rate.

You could phone the estate agent / landlord to find out. Also, if it is a fixed rate, find out whether they're willing to let you switch to a meter. There could be costs involved in making the switch so I imagine you would be liable for those as well (stack it up against your annual savings to see if it's worthwhile).

Edit: For houses with 3 or fewer people in, a water meter is almost always cheaper than fixed rate (unless you're going to make heavy use of a garden hose etc).

Ah well thats the type of advice I need. I'll put it in my list. Otherwise I'd have just gone with it.

It had awkward questions like, times the loo will be flushed. I just put 10times a day to avg the weekend out too... But those type of things you can never really know.

I certainly dont want an elec/gas meter where you top up. It seems to cost double :/

We've had a monthly budget for a while, its quite enlightening to see what comes in/goes out.

We've had to rebudget to plan for me being unemployed (however long that is for), fortunately the wife is the bigger earner.
