Guys,

Finally got the keys to my new property on Thursday!

In the hall at high level is the existing power supply and meter etc, I am wishing for this to be moved to the small entrance hall way, I have marked up these small pictures.

Now as you can see the main incoming line goes up the wall to this point, I am looking to get a electrician to do this. However if I need to move the meter etc would i need to get the power supply company to do this? same with the main incoming connection?

Thanks?

The electric company is responsible for everything up to & including the meter.
After the meter is you responsibility.

They usually send out someone to look at the required work, & then you will receive a quotation about 7 days later.

No idea to cost, depends on direction of supply cable, work involved in getting to it, like breaking up concrete path, BUT it's unlikely to be cheap.
Until you arrange a quotation you won't know the actual cost, you won't be committing yourself & until you sign.

Stupid place to put a consumer unit, would be awkward to get to in the dark.

Well I dont know if it even meets H&S as the main incoming cable you can actually see under the wall paper, and then comes out and goes into the boxing........ I could easier put my hands around it :O

You will be looking at a costly move from the energy company. All the meters should have security tags on all parts which will prevent you from doing this yourself.

We were quoted around the 2k mark for this in our old house and from £800+ for the gas meter

Get an independent electrician to see / check if its safe if unsure although I would have thought the survey would have picked this up when buying the property if it was unsafe.

H&S in the home.....:D

H&S in the home...... comes from being a Mechanical Engineer and having it forced upon me lol. Deal in flues though not electrical.

I took the panelling off today and took some more photos of it..... shocking.

Bad pun!:(

What a utter mess, badly laid out, the service fuse is it 100A?
Looks like they replaced consumer unit to bring it up to 17th regs.
I presume that mass of wire in the conduit on the left is ring mains, lighting circuits, etc.

Looking at your pic, if that floor is suspended, it isn't going to be too difficult rerouting the incoming supply to new location.

Hostile-17: They might make a brief mention in survey, but I seen wiring in a lethal state more than once, & it wasn't even mentioned a a survey.

Well I was thinking you can see that cable running up the wall and I measured last night the length of the cable is sufficient to get where I want it to go.

So I think it could be quite simple, as I think the current installation is not safe as I could easily pull that cable no problem.

I am just curious if a Sparky could disconnect the main incoming cable from the black box.

Off the record YES, I have cut the seals & pulled the service fuse & moved them in the past, & fitted new seals. Which you shouldn't do, should be done by electric board only.:(

The way I've done it is to remove fuse, then remove just the meter tails, & leave service fuse carrier attached to main cable, safer way.

As there is so little work involved in moving service fuse, I don't think it will be too expensive, no more than 30 minutes work, if you did some work getting access from A to B for the cable new location would help to keep costs down.

Can't you just break the service seals and then phone the leccy people saying you think it's been tampered with and have them come out to "fix" it?

Might be a bit suspicious when they come to look at it and he says "oh yeah while you're here you couldn't just stick it on the other wall could you" :p

Its that damn incoming cable I mean who puts its so I can touch and feel it down the wall it has simply been wallpapered over!

Your lucky it's not the old black tar/tape-wrapped cable, as that type would bump up the cost considerably moving it.
Get a quotation for the job from your electric supplier.

If your electrician removes service fuse & meter tails & he is clever you will find that mounting board will most likely come off the wall fairly easily, & leave the fuse carrier attached to the board, then move to new location & refix board to wall.

Better to get a proper quotation to move it, as I have said earlier.

Imo either get it moved professionally by the dno or leave it alone, if you move it yourself if anything goes wrong its a 300A+ fuse on the end of that cable, try to google cutout meter explosions, blindness, burns, lost limbs, copper shrapnel etc

Best to just box it in if concerned about being able to touch it or it getting damaged, if you want to have the fuse box somewhere else you can just run a submain from there to the new location.
