well, ive had my system a while now, and just wondering to myself if its worth me goin fer a lil upgrade..

currently got:

opteron 170 dual core @ 2850mhz
cooled with swiftech apex ultra+ watercooling
a+ twin engine 2x 250mm fan case
2gig dual channel ocz gold ddr ram
gainward 1024mb 7950gx2
dfi lanparty sli expert mobo
creative x-fi extreme audio
250gb maxtor sata2 hdd
pioneer db11bk 16x dl dvdrw
22" 1680x1050 gateway tft

processor wise what do you thing would be the next best step up?
i know it would be c2d, but if i was to go for a measley 6300 would it be worth it? noticeable? or would i have to go to a 6600 to notice the difference?

pure curiosity, but if i get some good answers, may have a 170 and a dfi fer sale ;-) lolol

A 6320 @ 3ghz will destry that opty of yours.

ONly upgrade if your current system is not doing what you want it to.

TBH I wouldn't bother.

I would get shut of that 7950 GX2 and get a 8800 GTS

When was the last time you did a format and reinstall? If windows is chuggy better doing that than spending money on new components that you don't need.

lol@destory!

Aikon, you obviously like your components, going by your rigs specs. I am just in the process of changing from a X2 4200 @ 2.8 to a core2 setup. I think after I have flogged all the bits it won't really cost very much.

I just got a little impatient reading about core2 and all the new boards etc and want to give it a whirl. Is it necessary... probably not. But I guess thats what hobbies are.

I will post some real results once I have it running. As it sounds like you are in the same boat.

IN 3D mark maybe not.

But it terms of pure processor speed I dont think a opty 170 @ 2.8 can shrink a DVD in 2 mins :p
Clock for clock C2D is about a third faster amd at encoding is 1 minute realy worth a new mother board ram and cpu .

I totally agree.

Although i suppose it does depend a little on what the op's doing. Gaming or encoding.

For the money i'd upgrade to C2D rather than doing anything with the graphics as you'd need a GTX to noticeably beat a GX2. I know i did. :D

He could sell his mobo, chip and ram for between £150 and £200 and (if he waits for intel's price cuts) buy a C2D rig (mobo, ram, cpu) for £230 - £250.

gt

Clock for clock is not an issue here,

C2D will clock to 3.4ghz +

Destroying AMD in its wake

ok 1 minute 15 seconds ;)

not to sure were you are getting this info from.

But having used both an opty 170 @2.8ghz 1.35v when I upgraded to C2D 2 weeks before release the speed increase was amazing

My point was that the only the noticeable improvement the C2D would bring is encoding speed. If this is very important go for a quad core . Were do u notice the masive improvment.

You seem to miss the point that eventually we all upgrade anyway.May as well do it while his current RIG still has some value.

I agree with u its getting the balance of maximum resale value and minimum new costs.Have u seen the price socket A stuff goes for on "the bay" lol I'm holding out till quad core comes down to less than £150 and 4gig ram for less than £100 before up grading .I cant see my cpu mboard or ram losing any more money it mite even go up a bit in value.

I was thinking that and then I see that AMD announced price drops on there Opteron chips yesterday

I highly doubt that.

C2D will see an improvement across the board.

depends what he plans to do imo, since i've gone up from opty 146 to c2d 6300 i havent really noticed much if any difference with what i do.
