thanks soo much fer all the input so far! its been a hell of a lot of help!

in regards to my needs, well, encoding wise, i never do it at all so not much of a bother to me, i susally just use my pc fer gaming, and something to mod lol,

so would the c2d upgrade be really worth it to see good speed increases in games like "oblivion" "stalker" "hl2" etc?

Mostly only 10-15fps going by what ive read, but tbh thats not bad going. Im in the same position (4800+ oc 3ghz), been offerd a tidy sum for my old stuff and would put me in a prime position to buy E6600 and the rest. Just be sure to buy decent motherboard which supports Quad's and maybe even DDR3 etc then yes imo its worth it. :)

depends what he plans to do imo, since i've gone up from opty 146 to c2d 6300 i havent really noticed much if any difference with what i do.

At what clocks?

your distain makes me think you are running C2D @ stock

I went from an old 805d @ 3.4ish to a E4300 @ 3 and the difference is incredible. Before things used to take time - sometimes I would wait for the PC to 'catch up' when going through windows menus or switching between games and walkthroughs (I'm very impatient).

Now everything is instant. The computer does what I want when I want with no exceptions. I'm also folding 24/7 so the CPUs more stressed too!

Can't sing enough praises for the C2D, I don't think I'll need a new chip for quite some time (or at least until I go vista) as this is really the level of power I expect from my computer.
