Moving oop norf

I used to live in Slaithwaite (Slawit to the locals), and honestly I quite miss it. On the train line between Manc and Leeds, and I used to pay £400/m for a two bed terrace and I now pay over £1k for the same in Bath (not even a nice part of Bath).

Mostly I miss those big skies. It's something else standing on top of a windswept hill looking over the vast rugged beauty of Yorkshire. The people are friendly, albeit somewhat rough around the edges in some parts.

If I could get the same money I get down here, but live up north, I totally would.

Slaithwaite is an hours walk away from me and please no , I'm not sure we could handle a Diddums here. It is lovely round here though and plenty of good hilly walks to keep fit.

If Harrogate is on the cards (big money), also take a look at places like Skipton (also big money). Whilst a car is essential around here anyway, there's good rail links to Leeds etc for commuting. There's also places like Halifax on the rougher end, due to being closer to Huddersfield and Bradford but still plenty of countryside.

The worst aspect about somet of these places though is tourism, they get really busy in the summer. They were busy before with the boom of staycations and everyone suddenly becoming a hiker and the pandemic has only added to that.

For me up here, these places are all close together as it's just how life can be vs the big city where your world is much smaller. For us in Barnoldswick (Originally from Ribble Valley) we're almost equidistant from the Lakes, North Wales and cities like Leeds, Manchester etc where you can visit for the day and drive home again. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else for that aspect alone. Beautiful countryside on our doorstep and no shortage of anything you could need within an hours drive.

Me and my wife tried to move to Burley-in-wharfedale just before Covid hit, had jobs lined up and house on the market etc. When Covid came around we just ended up staying put as we had no idea what was going to happen, fast forward to now and we're going again but this time with a 7 month old in tow. We can both do our jobs fully remote (but I'd probably look to move jobs once we're up there as a bit of a fresh start), we've sold our house and recently had an offer accepted on somewhere in Burley again.

For us the area is perfect, still has a small village/community feel but is bang in-between Ilkley (fancy town with lots of fancy shops) and Otley (has everything you could possibly need) but still has a train station that has trains going to Leeds and Bradford. House prices aren't thaat much cheaper now (we're moving from CM23) compared to what they were when we looked a few years ago, we basically get another bedroom for what we're selling ours for. We're not moving for work, to be closer to family etc... just because we love the area.

West and North of Leeds are good, South not so good and East is ok when you get out towards York.

As already mentioned, the train links are pretty good. The road network is poor and traffic is a big problem.

@Diddums, this is good advice if you're working, and need to be, in the centre as there are some nice parts to (the outskirts of) Leeds. I quite liked Chapel Allerton last time i was up that way.
If you (really) need to be south/south-west of Leeds then stick to villages.

As a southerner the only things i found living up there is Yorkshire gets remote/isolated very quickly once you get out of towns/citys; weather is definitely worse and noticeable driving up/down the M/A1; yokels will give you funny looks if you drop into one of their pubs; internet can be absolutely *****.

Oh whereabouts? There are only really a few places within walking distance tbf so I should be able to guess!

York is nice, I used to travel there for work quite a bit and did look into property there as my employer were talking about relocating hundreds of roles out of the London office. One issue I had (which you won't) is the properties within walking distance of the centre are mostly quite small or not that cheap by Northern standards, it was about £500k for a reasonable 4 bed. It's got a lot of traditional two bed terraced houses which might suit you coming from a flat.

Cowlersley, so pretty much just down the road! I often take a walk up to Blackmoorfoot Reservoir.
Yeah lovely area round Linthwaite. I do miss it! Nothing but scrotes buzzing around on mopeds after midnight and leaving their tangfastics wrappers on the street round 'ere!
