Moving to HK, advice needed

When I went I found the UK to be much more humid in comparison, weird :p

Keep in mind that nobody in the slightly more rural areas speaks English, you should be fine if you're staying near the main areas (Lantau, HK Island, causeway bay etc.)
Yeah, it'll be near the airport.

I'm interested to know what brought this on? If you've never been there before, i mean. It's a pretty big step/chance to move to somewhere you've never been, let alone somewhere like HK where it's an entirely different culture (and obviously language). Do you have a job lined up or something, or is your current job moving you perhaps?

HK is very westernised in places, but at the end of the day it's still Asia!

Language i dont think is really a big problem, you will be amazed at how good their english is (not everyone of course).

I know, i've been to HK and got around without knowing a single letter of Cantonese. However living and working over there would be completely different.

Fair play at going out there to surport all involved and just up and leave!

I hope it goes really really well dude!

I aslo hope your partners mother gets well soon.

Very brave, very sweet and loving of what your doing.

If anyone kicks off 3 years is plenty of time to know it's real deal

Sadly, one thing you won't experience these days is the famous approach to the airport. When I last visited Honk Kong Kai Tak was still operational and we had the pleasure of seeing the rooftops of Kowloon closer than we would have liked. :D

Really appreciate the kind words Drazic.

It looks like a date has already set too, September 2nd.

I've already started learning Cantonese, but as English is the second language over there, it's not going to be completely different.

Oh, and thanks for the info, SpeedFreak.

Speaking Cantonese will get you so far (60% of the way), reading it is another story, and it'll be hard getting the buses if you can't read. And as for English being the 2nd language, well....if you stick with areas thats full of Ex-pat may be, then you'll be fine. Go away from HK island then you'll be surprise how much different it is. Not trying to scare you, just want you to know.

p.s. do what rotty says, get a brolly and prepare for tropical storms like hurricane and 90% humidity in the summer. The winter hardly gets below zero but it'll feel it as the wind is blown from the north usually, the days are not as long as the UK in the summer but longer in the winter too being on the edge of the equator.

After visiting last year i was interested in how easy it would be to move over there. Apparently a lot of people think getting a job will be easy, because there are a lot of UK/US firms over there. But remember, that most people over there learn English, plus they have the advantage of also knowing Cantonese (and often Mandarin), so a local with the same spec CV will look more appealing.

Saying that, good luck, i would be very interested to hear how it goes.
Please report back to the forums and let us know.
