Moving to SSD from RAID0 VelociRaptors

Hi all,

I have been researching SSD's over the last few days and have learned quite a bit regarding their operations. TRIM, garbage collection, sandforce and other controller types to name just a few things.

I currently have two WD VelociRaptors in RAID0. This has served me well over the last 3 years and I want to move to the land of SSD :)

I have been looking at the >200GB SSD range and have come across one: OCZ IBIS 240GB HDSL. Read Speed: 740MB/Sec, Write Speed: 720MB/Sec, Flash: MLC, Controller: 4x SandForce SF-1222, Buffer: 0MB

This is retailing at the £500+ price mark. Is this a bit overkill for someone who uses their primary partition for some software development, a few local SQL databases and gaming? Would I be better off going for a slower R/W SSD i.e. Crucial RealSSD C300 256GB?

Thanks in advance.

From a personal point of view I'd say it's total overkill and a waste of money. That's just my opinion though.

I'd wait for one of the new Crucial or Intel drives that should be arriving shortly with 400mb/sec+ read speeds and save some money.

I'd take pretty much any current SSD over a HDD though.

Crucial drives are supposed to be shipping in Feb. Some info on them here.

I think the Intel drives are be a bit faster, but I'd guess they'll be more expensive.
