I have recently arrived back to the UK from being abroad for 7 years. I don't really have many ties and neither does my partner so we can move anywhere in the UK.

I have spent thousands of hours it seems scouring Reddit, newspapers and statistics. Middlesbrough seems to have a bad reputation but we would afford to live in the best parts of the town in a detached house. Rather than say moving to Bristol where my mum lives and not even affording a flat in a good area.

Anyone from Middlesbrough have some experience with the town or tips on where to look at? Going to drive up there and spend a couple of days looking around.

We are also going to look around Durham, Morpeth, Rugby, Barnsley, Perth Scotland and Stirling Scotland.

Just want to live somewhere nice with job opportunities, nice countryside around, friendly people and cheap housing.

What field are you working in? Might help narrow the options.

Morpeth is really nice. Areas of Durham are nice (ask here and we can fill you in). Don't know much about Middlesbrough / Stockton but I understand it has some decent areas.

According to a Londoner, anywhere north of London/M25 is the North, so that covers most of the country :D

On a serious note, I like Stafford as someone who will never be able to drive. It's large enough a town to have most facilities but small enough that you can walk from the Stafford outskirts (where I live) into town. It has great railway links with Crewe and Stoke 1 stop away, which are also well-connected places. You can get direct trains to Birmingham (+airport / NEC), Manchester, Glasgow (once a day), London, Bristol, Liverpool and Bournemouth.

Stafford itself is semi-rural and semi-urban.

Talking of Bristol though, I enjoyed living there for a while. I rented a bedsit which was affordable for me just off Filton Avenue and enjoyed the nightlife there. Not sure what it's like nowadays as I'm quoting early 2000s.

Don't we all, reality may make such thoughts but dreams... :(

The UK has an overpopulation issue affecting nearly all walks of life.

Middlesbrough? I try and drive past there as quickly as I can. Depends if industrial chic is your taste.

County Durham way has pretty areas, Northumberland some glorious countryside.

South Wales is pretty decent, price wise.

Cardiff is relatively expensive, but ten miles up the road prices drop like a stone and fall further with distance.

It's about an hours drive to your mum's in Bristol.

I now live in a small town in the valleys (Cardiff boy made bad) and it's like living in the countryside for me.

check out saltburn or yarm or marske all within 10 miles of middlesbrough and fantastic , wish people who didnt have a clue would not comment on a thread or a place they know nothing about , must be a nightmare in real life always right , butting in conversations ,know alls , talking overtop of people instead of listning , op im from the are any questions please pm me

Morpeth‘s a good choice, the town centre’s nice. You can probably get more for your money in Blyth, the town centre is “colourful” and the beach is lovely.

Basically the further north you are the lower the population density and the cheaper the housing, job opportunities may be lower too unless you're WFH etc. Anywhere in the south is sought after overpopulated and pricey
