Moving to the North

Thanks for the input so far. I don't have any career in mind and neither does my partner. Open to options as we have been doing all kinds of work. Budget is £190000 and we would want something detached. Don't mind about size or if it's a bungalow/house.

Middlesbrough just seemed good because we would be able to afford to live in Nunthorpe which seems to have a great reputation. We would like to have countryside on our doorstep and a national park within a half hour drive. I know it's a lot to ask for and it might not be possible. Will have to see.

You'll struggle for Morpeth for 190k

I'm from Middlesbrough, now reside in Durham, Consett.

Seems a lot of people who comment about Middlesbrough actually don't know the area at all. The town centre and immediate surrounding areas can be dire so avoid. However there are some incredible places for the money in comparison to anything down south. Nunthorpe and Marton are indeed lovely places to live, my parents live in Acklam, sister in Marton and Uncle in Nunthorpe. All have great countryside within 5/10 mins. Quite hilarious the comments people leave on somewhere they don't truly know.

Depends how far north you want to go. Here is Consett there are some lovely houses for 190k ish and we are literally in the countryside with Northumberland on your doorstep, some of the best places in the country.

I live in Marton as mentioned above, this area is 'OK' as is Nunthorpe. The closer to the moors, e.g. Great Ayton and Stokesley the better it gets imo. 190k you'll struggle for anything decent and detached in Marton/Nunthorpe without needing work.

Unfortunately if you do manage to buy in this area you still have to go closer to the town centre from time to time and it is a complete cesspit. I work in the town centre and it is a poo hole.

Edit: if you do plan on moving up this way and need any help scoping out places, please feel free to drop me a message.

Love post in forums that still think google is not an actual thing. Click baitery.

I live in County Durham. I've worked in Darlington, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and other smaller towns/villages over the years. I'd say try and get somewhere close to the A1 and A19.

I personally wouldn't recommend Middlesbrough from what I have seen (working in the AV Dawson Riverside yard and getting lunch from the town centre). It's not much of an experience but those years weren't fun.

Some places inland of Sunderland have nice areas (around Chester-le-Street/Houghton-le-Spring). They also have bad areas so watch out. Living around there would sit Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland on your doorstep, which would be useful for the job hunt.

Another option would be roughly near Sedgefield and Stillington. That gives access to Darlington, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool while you can live in a peaceful, quiet area.

Just some thoughts from me.

We also really don't mind if it needs a lot of work. As long as we can get a mortgage on it. We have lived in temporary accommodation and a car for the past 7 years so any space will be amazing. Our dream would be if you were allowed to just buy a plot and put a caravan on it

There is land for sale in the area. A few of them are self-build schemes.
I've been looking into converting a couple of shipping containers into a home and sitting it on a plot of land as they qualify under the Caravan Act.

to be fair blackpool .. is still ok .. least we don't have a stabbing every week .. :P you just have to be able to put up with the ******* that come here .. but most don't go into town unless they have to ..

Rugby is massively overcrowded. 15 years ago it was a great place to live, given its location and easy rail commute to London. Now you'll struggle to park in the town, or even outside your house depending on the location. You'll also struggle getting anything detached that doesn't need a huge amount of work for 190k.

Wow still talking, I renovated and tripled the value while you asked a computer forum .............and did nothing

Asking for advice before taking a trip around the country looking at areas seems a shrewd idea to me. Not sure why you had to write the reapotyoi did tbh
