Hi all i have an ssd with my OS installed on but would like to move the user files to another hdd.
I have seen loads of tutorials on how to do this but with no success.
Basically when i copy all files from C: to D: for example it says some are still in use.

I tried it by going into safe mode and logged on as a different user with full administration privileges.

Anyone got a guide or know of a decent guide to follow? or know why some files say they are still in use when i start pc and go straight to another user?

thanks

When I've tried this on Windows 7 or 8, right click properties on my docs, change the location to the new location, and Windows copies everything over automatically.

I wouldn't do your whole profile.

Just do..

Documents
Videos
Music
Photos
Downloads

Right click, Properties them, then Move. If they are currently C:\Users\Jack\Photos

Make the New location something like..

D:\Jack\Photos

(or whatever you want really, just be careful not to set them as the root of D:\ )

system properties > user files

I think that lets you chance the location but not of a profile your currently logged onto

when u want to use this command to make a junction, create your new user directory with your user files and then delete the old folder and use the command to create a junction. It makes no difference but if you look at hidden system files the user folder is still there with a junction to your new destination. This method is used by default so that programs written for an older OS where the user files are in a different location can be installed in your current operating system.

I have moved the user documents successfully using this command. I tried to move the whole user but at least my first attempt was unsuccessful and I had to create a new user (at least documents was backed up).

With user music, videos ect. it doesn't matter if you place files in user/music you can right click the folder and add another location and then change that to default if you like. With the music folder windows will create a search ability based on genre, date ect for all your added music directories (& subdirectories).
