MPC-HC best codecs?

Rebuilt my HTPC rig recently and installed the latest version of XMBC + MPC-HC as an external player with great results.

Is it worth installing extra / replacement codecs (madvr, haali, lav?) instead of the default MPC-HC codecs to play MKVs? Would the quality improvements be worth the effort.

Thanks

If you're happy with what you have now, just keep it.

I'm using LAV with MPC-HC since the stuff I play doesn't always like the internal filters.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have no problems to speak of with the internal codecs, so i am happy. Just wondering if there would be a noticeable improvement in video quality moving to external filters (720p / 1080p content).

I had problems with mpc-be release with my selection of codecs and the issue with the lack of move in window mode.

What I actually use is an "old" version of mpchc-be (v1.6.2.4360), I then disable all the internal filters. I then use:

Lavfilters 0.51.3 for video decoder and media spiltter
ffdshow-tryouts official release rev4422 for audio
evr sync for renderer.

I then enable the dts and dd passthrough on the ffdshow-tryouts

This is the best results that I have got trying different combinations.

If you want to know how to do this set up let me know and i can explain.

MPC-HC uses the EVR by default which looks awful due to edge sharpening and the black level is usually wrong.

Haali is an improvement and MadVR is an even greater improvement.

Thanks, i'll give them a closer look. I was playing last night and i'm using the EVR CP renderer but noticed now that i'm getting dropped frames whenever i move the seek bar to a different time. I don't get any dropped frames during playback itself but pausing or shifting the time back and forth i get drop frames which i'm sure i didn't have previously. Fresh install of W7x64, AMD II 245, AMD 6450 2gb, 8gb ram, ssd boot, media on a server via gigabit lan.

Check out MPC-BE

Has a few enhancements over HC http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18441261

Namely the Aud/Sub buttons on the main screen

Going to give this a go as it looks nice and the addition of the subs button is something i've always missed.

If you wouldn't mind i'd appreciate this, thanks :)

Remove all other players and codec packs. Download the components, i use the 64bit for default player.

To configure mpc-hc to work with lavfilters and ffdshow. Disable all the internal filters in mpc-hc by deselecting them. Disable the internal audio switcher in mpc-hc. Configure the player to your liking. I can give you my config if you want. But most just view settings.

To configure lav filters. On the splitter, input formats, enable everything. on the Video settings, formats tab, leave as default which i think is everything. Lav audio settings, i think you can leave as default because ffdshow just overides it.

ffdshow video settings, on the codec tab, disable h264, xvid and divx. On audio settings, output tab, enable all the passthrough options, dts, ac3 etc.

when you play a x264 video with dts or dd. Right click on the video and go to filters. It should say lavspliter, lavvideo, ffdshow audio and evc sync.
