MP's - Pay rise

Fine give it to them, but take it back in others areas such as subsidized alcohol, expenses etc. the people who want the pay rise can have it but should have to sacrifice their expenses

This made me laugh
A survey released by the watchdog in January found politicians on average believed they should be paid £86,000 rather than £66,000, with some demanding more than £100,000.

Really? Asking a person if they think they should be paid more?!?! I would bet both my testicles that the majority of people who work would like to be paid more for the same job!!!!

This is just horse **** you don't need to attract people to politics with money it should be done for public service, the sacrifice is you could earn more doing something else

Yeah, this should apply to doctors, firemen and all other public servants too?

Yes you're right. They should all be expected to work for free. Servants to the land they love, their zeal for king and country keeping them warm...

I for one think they should be paid a little bit more, but bared categorically from any expenses costs out side of standard class (in advance) travel (train or plane only). Also a minimum tariff of days active in parliament and days active in local area (totalling 320 days as they can work weekends) before they get any pay, works out as working say 22 days a month like everyone else...

Literally got to be a joke. £20,000?

Mad idea.. Pay them £20,000 less, then you only have people doing the job who are in it because it's a job they want to do rather than a job that pays well.

...who want's to do a job with bad pay?

Local Government workers havn't had a penny in 3 years on their say so and then they go and award themselves tens of thousands.

Scandalous.

If they're working 80 hours a week then I think it's justified. But then you've got to take into account their holidays too, so I think that would push it to 100 hours...

I think you're confusing MPs (everyone elected to the commons) with ministers (the subset of MPs from the party/parties in power who have a job within or heading a government department).

Someone who is responsible for a govt dept(or part of it) and who has to fulfill all the usual duties of an MP might well work long hours... I'm not seeing it for say an opposition backbencher though.

MPs turn up to vote & take part in debates... they also spend time attending surgeries in their constituency... they can have other jobs too... plenty are company directors etc...

Why can't they go by first class rail? If they're in first class, they can actually do work whilst commuting from their constituency to Parliament, for example... which is pretty difficult to do in 'normal' carriages, I'd argue... especially when working on confidential matters (working on issues raised by individual constituents/with a load of paperwork/etc).

Firstly, its not a real job, working in Burger King is harder work than being an MP, don't let them convince you otherwise, they are making it up, its a sweet ride.

Also they represent common people, they can **** well sit with common people on the way to work. If they don't represent common people, they can pay the extra to sit in first class, that's what the "a few grand" pay rise can cover.

For them to have an elite class because they are MP's but also represent the common person is just a pile of hypocritical nonsense so they should be made to follow the average employment rules of everyone else. If they want nice travel, they pay for it. Thatcher would be proud...

u mad bru? You seem so mad you're going to be blind to rational debate. Just asking, before I bother engaging further.

Mp's have it easy, I know I haz politics degree yo...

In reality i firmly believe they need a pay increase, but also a clearly defined job instead of a muck about being an mp is currently, look at the utter **** that get into government at the moment like Osborn (I'm more qualified to be chancellor than him, A-level maths and all). Give them a token increase, take away the millions of quid they screw us for each year and make them actually do a job for their money and I will not take the voter apathy party to the poles in 18 months...

I'm astonished that MPs are payed what they are. I earn (Yeah, get me) a lot more than an average MP for a job that is not anything like as important (Note, important, not hard).

There is a massive danger in paying MPs a lower wage, in that it means only people who are better off could afford to be an MP. For me to be an MP (stop laughing, I'm not pretending I would) it would be a substantial pay cut (Yay, again, get me).

That scares me. I want the most capable people leading areas, communities, and our government. Not just people who happen to be able to afford it.

You miss the point, name me one MP that is top quality, I have yet to see one MP who does not tell lies to safeguard their seat.

There's an element of truth to this, but I think put upon them by the media - and indirectly, us.

They can't give a straight answer because they get persecuted for the answers.

Scenario, by girlfriend:

What do you think of my new haircut

It's AWESOME, I love it, want to go bang bang?

What was wrong with it before, I hate you

Ahahahah! Right. No, what you'll get is rich people doing the job because the income is pocket money.
