MPs are all for Freedom of Information, as long as it doesn't apply to them.

Today's Third Reading debate on David Maclean's Freedom of Information Amendment Bill has just concluded after several hours with a vote in favour from a total of 78 Labour MPs and 18 Tories.

Both main parties declared themselves to be “neutral” on the issue and many MPs deliberately chose to stay away and let the vote get carried to benefit them without their fingerprints all over it. Only the Liberal Democrats turned out in any numbers. Special commendation should go to MPs like Norman Baker, Mark Fisher, David Winnick and Richard Shepherd for their stirling work trying to oppose the Bill even though they were unsuccessful. We must now rely on the Lords to stop this grotesque piece of legislation becoming Law.

For those who feel particularly strongly, and want to write to their local MP to complain, or leave an angry voicemail on their House of Commons phone, the fingerprints of the following politicians were on the Bill in favour:

Makes you wonder doesnt it. What do all those mps have to hide!!

stupid amounts of money that is claimed as expenses when it really should never be!

I knew we had morons running this country but Jesus Chirst...

Although it will hurt, I will actually thank Norman Baker when I see him next.

Actually this was on Radio 4 the other day - two MP's arguing the case - one for the exemption, one against it.

It actually made a lot of sense that it shouldnt apply to certain things MP's do - some people go to their MP in confidence, and probably wouldn't if they knew their details could be released to a third party - for example, when making complaints about certain neighbours, that sort of thing.

Outline special circumstances such as that then? I believe the proposed bill bans ANY information being released. If I wanted to, I should be able to find out how much my MP wasted on transporting himself over the year. If this bill is passed, no chance.

At the end of the day it proves they're in it for themselves.

Well put.

I was only casually listening to the debate whilst driving but I seemed to get the impression that things like expenses etc etc would be exempt from this bill - it mostly covers contact with constinuents etc?

fox, your turning into that pipe and slippers man again ;]

radio4 while in your 5 series!

I think there are two versions of this bill. You have the more lighter version which you speak of and the more hard-line version which MPs are pushing.

The previous Scottish Tory Party leader (David McLetchie) lost his job due to a "scandal" over his "dodgy" taxi charges. Many others are being questioned over various charges to the taxpayer according to recent media stories here.

Funny how it is a Tory that initially sponsored this bill.

Just goes to show Yes (Prime)Minister was so accurate..
Almost everything in politics makes so much more sense when viewed in the context of Yes, (Prime) Minister. 'Twas a fantastic program.

Liberal Democrat MPs have turned out in force to oppose this bill and Norman Baker, Richard Shepherd and David Winnick are all doing a sterling job trying to stop it from passing. We^ll have to wait and see if they succeed.
Another occasion of the Lib Dems doing something I whole heartedly agree with but failing misreably to get any media coverage out of it.

Thanks for bringing up the story Spie, didn't realise this had got this close to going through. Transparent government? That'll be a no then. Got to wonder just what part in 'building public confidence' this is for.

Convenient also that it is getting it's third reading after Blair has said he is retiring but Brown hasn't taken over yet. Politics at it's turgid worst IMO.
