MR2

Its not the same engine with a turbo bolted on.

Isn't it? Barring the turbocharger and lower compression pistons, what is the difference?
I thought the 3S-GE and 3S-GTE were basically the same unit (as are most turbocharged versions of NA engines)

I'm no expert but I was always led to believe they are very different engines?

Either way, its a very strong engine and doesn't have a tendency to go wrong.

After a bit of searching on wiki it seems that it is just a variation of the 3S-GE. I have never looked into it until now but a while a go I read somewhere that it was a completely different engine and took it as truth.

Oh well, at least I now know the truth :D

The 3S-GTE is obvioulsy based on the 3S-GE, but like most manufacturers variants there are numerous detail changes, e.g. the turbo block has extra oil passages for the turbo feed and for piston cooling oil jets. Cams, pistons, flywheel, manifolds etc. are different.

BTW, blue smoke does not always point to turbo oil seals (but this is the most common cause on turbo'd engines). Worn or broken rings/ring lands can also cause excessive smoke, and worn valve guides/seals can cause puffs of blue smoke when changing gear or when you apply power after being on the overrun.

Check the coolant system as the pipes which run front to back between the radiator and engine can fail at this sort of age and can be a costly fix (drop the fuel tank etc). Ask if it has already had them replaced :)

Make sure toyota forlife coolant has been used (ribena coloured iirc).

Got a reply back regarding this.

Yes this is true but there are no leaks at present, i have not had any work done
regarding replacement coolant pipes or radiator and there is nothing on the service history either but that doesnt go back as far
as when it was in japan. i have replaced the coolant and bled the system myself using genuine toyota coolant the can is in the back of the car and u can check the
colour in the expansion bottle when you view, i have also recently fitted a new o-ring to the bleed valve at the front of the car as the
old one had perished and was leaking.
