Microsoft has been attending the Electronic Entertainment Expo video game-based trade show, better known as E3, since it started in the mid-1990s.
This year's E3 will officially be held on June 11-13 in Los Angeles but typically Microsoft holds a pre-E3 press conference in LA the day before the trade show officially starts.
Today, the Major Nelson website, run by Microsoft's Larry Hryb, did something that it has never done before.
It posted a countdown clock that will reach zero when E3 2013 begins. Hryb's only statement on the post was, "And it’s on…"

Still its what a lot of us have been waiting for. The new era starts this year!! :D

You think they'd release a new console within the next 12 months? Personally I think Christmas 2014 but that's not based on anything, how rubbish would it be if the timer was for something completely underwhelming? :D

I'm guessing Christmas 2013 :D

If it does go to cloud gaming at the end of this life cycle using the same box as the rumours suggest this could be the last console we ever buy!

There's going to be a lot of disappointed people if the new console is not announced.. I think there will be an announcement and with any luck a 2013 release. Question is who will get the next gen console out first MS or Sony...

Never bought a console on release as the list of games just don't justify it for me, plus the costs initially can be ridiculous... Sounds like a definite Q2 2014 purchase for me though.

What do we think the cost will be on release?

Well, the PS3 on release was £400 without any games, leading many to spend £500 by the time they bought 2 games and an extra controller.

Xbox was cheaper and was £270 at release without any extras.

The Xbox 720 leaked documents hinted at a $299 release price. Typically when US products get launched in the UK the US prices in $ just gets converted to GBP so i predict a £300 launch price for the 720 in the Uk.

No idea bout PS4. It was very slow at the start when they launched at £400.

the leaked design brief pointed towards it being some kind of "always on" media hub with the ability to record TV etc.. so i think a HD is a given.

I expect they will go down the Sony route and have all models with hard drives, but then just offer different sizes.

You've taken it out of context a bit:

The game is so technically impressive, Yerli believes, that the top-end work done on the PC version of the game will rival the graphical capabilities of next-gen consoles.

He's saying that their game due for release in Feb will look better than the games released on next-gen consoles.

"That's why we said [two years ago] that Crysis 3 is next-gen ready already," Yerli added. "We did that without knowing the specs [of next-generation consoles], but it's not going to be much more than what we have done so far. And it turns out we were pretty much right."

Yerli's comments suggest that he and his team know all about the capabilities of Microsoft and Sony's next-generation systems. But what exactly is he prepared to let on? Well, for starters, he thinks that the current high cost of memory and processors means that it's "impossible" for next-gen consoles to make an impact similar to that of the previous generation.

What he's saying is they've developed and are about to release a game now which will look as good, or better, on PC at this moment in time than he believes the next generation consoles games will look. You can take that as a sign that the consoles will look similar to high end PC rigs now but of course we will be playing on much lower resolutions.

Slight problem is, Yerli is pretty much a habitual over exaggerator/self praiser

I think its fairly safe to assume that the next gen consoles are going to be capable of putting out the current crop of gamess at the same image quality as they have on high end PCs currently.

However consoles remain static, and by the time we replace them in another 7 years or so they will look equally as poor as they do now. Its just because we're at the end of a life cycle, when PS3 and Xbox 360 came out, the graphics were stunning for the time.
