OK I'm a complete newbie as far as ssd drives are concerned. Having just got a Gigabyte board that can use an mSATA drive, is there any point using this over a normal ssd?

use a regular ssd, msata are limited on some boards to sata2 speeds and disable sata port 5 when in use, they are handy if your limited for space or sata ports

otherwise stick to a regular ssd

You don't specify the board but on my z77 ud5 the msata is sata2 so saa3 is up to 2x faster depending on the ssd of course.

It all depends. The mSATA Lite-On SSD in my latest laptop outperforms the regular SATA Crucial C300 SSD in my desktop (plugged into a SATA 2 port).
