MSI 290X LE quick review and thoughts

Cheers Harlequin and working now. Tells me I need an update but as I run the bench threads, I might just allow my scores :D

Edit:

Also got COD:AW working by changing the 144Hz to 85Hz in the cfg (thanks). All the textures are messed up though and it looks like I am playing on a SNES lol. I put all the settings to max as well except for supersampling and 2560x1440P.

Running and running nicely but textures are all messed up :(

are you talking about the low res textures?

It does that if you set it too high for the amount of Buffer you have, it even tells you that as you set it. :)

And yes apparent 4GB is not enough for this game to run maxed out at 1440P

Really? lol Well I will be and I assumed it was just some tweaking needed. It did say the memory used was 3200 or summit like that, so I didn't think it was that at all.

Edit:

2850MB for that as seen in the video... Surely that still leaves me well over a GB to play with?

I remember having the same problem on AW. Can't remember how I fixed it though :/
Try turning the cache options off.

Does anyone else get massive stutter when they enable V-Sync or is this just another 'me' thing?

Just tried one of my favourite and best looking games "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter" and tearing is bad and enabling V-Sync gives horrendous stutter :(

I did try and record it but Raptr's DVR just recorded a black screen.

That could be it, i have not played it for some time so don't remember either, i'll fire it up to have a look.

Greg are you overclocked? The thing with AMD cards is they don't necessarily crapout if they don't have engough volts or are in other ways unstable from an overclock, they just don't run all that well.

Unfortunately i don't have The Vanishing of Ethan Carter so i can't test it.

No, I am too lazy to OC and generally run at stock whatever system I have except for the CPU. The only time I OC is when benching.

No biggie and the more I think on it, it is the fact of coming from 144Hz G-Sync to 85Hz non G-Sync. I watched Matt's vid, which replicates my gameplay and I see a stutter but he and a few others don't, so maybe it is just me being used to G-Sync.

Appreciated all the help and info though guys and no real problems to speak of now. Shame on the 120/144Hz bit but I can live with that :)

I can see the stutter in Matts vid, i have a similar problem in my own game, i know what it is in that as obviously i have access to source, i can debug, with that i have spend more time in recent weeks trying to even out batching calls in my environment, not an easy thing to do when you are so constrained by an API thats about to be replaced and needed to be about 10 years ago!

I'm hitting the same issues that Ubisoft have with FC4.

Ethan Carter is a DX9 Game, nothing wrong with that but its even worse than DX11 and i think Nvidia use an OpenGL hack to improve Batching performance where they can. so that may be why its a smoother experience on Nvidia with that particular.

Not played FC4 but played AC:U today for quite a bit and with V-Sync on, it played really well. No issues at all, which quite surprised me. The very occasional stutter but I had that with the Titans.

Its a good game, and it runs a lot better than it did on release, its an improvement but an improvement on something that was actually horrific.
