Msi 7970 Oc bad overclocker

I have haven't I.. What have you managed to push out of your card?

Well the max I could get is 1050 on the core and 1600 on the memory due to the fact that the card was voltage locked, which is why I'm interested to know what you've done with your voltage, if anything.

I'm taking delivery of the same card as you tomorrow and I'm aiming for 1200/1600 at, hopefully, acceptable temperature and fan noise levels.

Passed on 1125/1550 :)

I'm going for 1200/1600.

Looking good. I can run 1125 on stock voltage on mine. Once i go past that though i need a voltage bump.

I can run 1200 core at around 1.167-1.175 volts.

I find after getting unigine stable i normally need another notch or two on the voltage to get full game stable, so see how you get on.

My card shows 1174v as default, why would you climb to it? Is yours lower?

I have a higher Asic card, so mine will run cooler than yours. (albeit only slightly)

My default voltage is 1.112 Asic 78.9.

75% and below asic means stock voltage of 1.175.

However you can apply more voltage to your card so if you can keep it cool enough, technically you might have more headroom as im limited on the amount of voltage i can apply.

You can go up to 1.3 volts, i can only go up to 1.237.

All 7970's can only apply a max of 0.125mv to the voltage before OCP (over current protection) kicks in.

Failed at 1200/1550, black screen before heaven even ran. Should I step back a bit or up the voltage mate?

Put the voltage up two notches. Ensure power slider is at +20%. Ensure temps stay below 75c for now, we may be able to relax the fan settings later. Right now its all about stability and lower temps will help that.

After every black screen/crash restart your pc. I know its a pain but its the best way to find stability with this card.

Temps aren't a issue now Matt, not since i adjusted the fan profile.

Pushing 1200/1550 brought on the following results..

@ 1.2v = device crash in heaven
@ 1.230 = artifacts everywhere in heaven, from launch
@ 1.25v = same artifacts, from launch

I dare go any higher with the volts. I wouldn't even let Heaven run as soon as I saw the artifacts. Just to be clear, reverting the clocks back to default. the artifacts disappear.

I'm resetting the pc each time i run heaven and have the power to +20.

I guess 1200mhz on the core is out of the question. Down I go..

they tend to scale pretty close in core voltage=core mhz so 1.2v=1.200mhz core voltage and so on,try backing down on memory freq a little

Sounds like you're making large jumps.

Work the core in 10mhz amounts, and apply 1 notch of voltage from stock as and when its needed. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Work your way up from 1125 slowly and carefully for best results.

True true,

1175/1550/stock volts = device removed in Heaven. Backing down the memory a little as wazza suggested.

Only overclock one at a time, run memory at stock until you find your max stable core at acceptable temps and volts. Then move onto the memory.

Great advice. :)

Well heaven failed at 1135/1500 memory, stock volts, ill try 1125, stock memory, stock volts and work up. Ta.

Yep. Once you passed 1125 put it tup to 1135. If it fails, black screen, directx error, driver reset. Put the voltage up one notch and try again at 1135.

Once you get higher on the core, you might even need to keep temps below 70c, thats what its like for me once i go past 1225. At this stage adding more voltage will not remove artifacts, you need to keep it cooler.

Play around and see how you get on.

Like a blind man at an orgy, you're going to have to feel your way in.

Crashed @ 1125, stock memory, 1174v.. I can send this card back within 5 days right? I'd rather buy a card that's 1125 clocked out the box.

You can send it back within 14 days if its from ocuk i believe.

However don't give up the ghost yet, see what shes capable of. Put the voltage up a notch and re-run.

1100+ on stock volts is good.

It's just I'm running at 1440p and need as much juice as I can get. It's frustrating I can't seem to hit even 1125 on the core (the average).

Edit : 1125mhz core, stock memory, 1.2v still crashing in Heaven.

Who said that's the average? Also, a card which can only achieve a poor overclock at stock can sometimes achieve a good overclock with some voltage tweaking. If you can hit 1100 on the core at stock, you got lucky IMO.

Do a bench at stock vs. 1100 on core and you will see the difference in frame rates.
