MSI Lightning 7970 CF or 680 SLI Queries

^ Yup, I was also going to go for a Lightning but watercool it, no chance of that now.

Not even all the other 7970's have decent ports!

A 670 has 2 DVI-D (dual link), displayPort and HDMI, so that's win win for me.

I would love to try the Lightning as you can supposedly get 120hz working with a hack, but who knows how reliable it is.

Hehe yup ill get him on to it :D. The new ati drivers look tasty so would be great to see the results :D

Just a shame , because the price difference was massive. Would he need two adapters to run on a single monitor? Or just the one adapter?

Quite ridiculous, it's so hard with my 670, I had to plug the cable into the monitor and turn it on, effort. ;)

Gregster, am i correct in saying you used to have a evga 680? If so, how do you feel the MSI Lightning fairs off against the EVGA? especially when overclocked, did you notice much frame rate increase?

Apologies if you didn't have a EVGA :)

That I did Sir and it faired well against the LTG but the thing I love about the LTGs is the throttling or I should say, lack of it. The EVGA would hit 70C with SLI quite easily and would throttle back till it got back under 70C also the max overclock I had on the EVGA was around 1326MHZ and +620 on the memory. With the LTG, I can hit 1376mhz on air with +670 on the memory. Obviously every card is a lottery and some cards will beat this and some wont.

I would have to say real world gaming, I wouldn't notice a thing untill going 3 screens at 5760*1080 and this is where the overclocks realy kick in. I can run both my LTGs at 1350mhz+ comfortably in all the games I play and at this resoloution, the frames are low so every frame counts :)

Awesome news mate :)

Speaking for myself im currently running two EVGA 680 in SLI, on evga precision i have the gpu clock offset set to +70mhz and the memory clock offset set to 300mhz. I cant seem to exceed this without crashes within games. The temps never exceed 60oc.

I also have noticed my frames in games are not very consistent, they spike up and down very rapidly. They also sometimes drop below 60fps in games such as BF3 Multiplayer. They generally stay about 100. Is this common for a 680 SLI set up? I also only play at 1080p resolution

I would hazzard a guess in it being tempratures and your CPU 'may' be bottlenecking your 2 cards.

Run GPU-Z and monitor the temps and see if both of your cards are hitting 99%. This will give more of an indication what is happening. When you see a drop in frames, ALT+TAB out of the game to see what happened on the sensors tab.

Edit: you can always tick the box which says "Log to file" and then go and check after a spell. (note where the saved file goes to)

Sorry not upgraded my info in my sig. Currently on a 3570 i5 running at 4.8ghz, temps full load on prime95 don't exceed 65oc and the gpu on laod after about 1hr 30mins on bf3 never exceed 60oc. I will give what you said a try though :) Thanks!

Ahhh ok. Others have said that BF3 isn't coded great for SLI but after getting my 3930K, I don't see any frame drops at all. Also bear in mind that servers can also make fps drop regardless of how good your comp is.

Only me again :) Right just done what you advised bud and run gpuz in the background whilst i played some BF3. I logged the info to file and tabbed out and had a look what was happening, according to the file my GPU LOAD never exceeds 42% ? :S im confused

Low ping servers, around 20ms :)

Just tried in a singleplayer and GPU usage went to about 90%. Still get frame drops. Also the gpu load is not consistent, it varies from 50%-90% strange?

I would put it down to poor SLI scaling then. I will have a play with my CPU on stock and see what is happening to both my GPUs.

Just had a quick play on 64 man MP (I sucked bad) and both GPUs at 99% with occasional dips to 90%. I put that down to the server though.

Not sure what is going on with you mate sorry :(

Edit:

Check that your GPUs are at the designated speed, as it maybe reporting wrong.

Yup just tried crysis 2 with the same affect. The card dosent exceed 84% :S Confuddled!

Also according to GPUZ my second nvidia 680 isn't running at the same overclock speed as my main 680
