MSI Optix MAG271CQR - Brief Review

Ok i think i must uploaded the wrong barcode or something but ive sent a webnote to find out.

ok thanks ive just tried them but it just looks too dark ive been tempted to send this back as well but i paid £333 for this monitor plus i hoping to sell the headset so its not a bad price for a 1440p va monitor. Ideally i would like a IPS monitor but i just didn't want to spend £500 plus! especially when im thinking of upgrading to the new Ryzens soon.

Yeah same here. The problem you have is you could fork out £500 plus and then be hit with IPS glow/bleed etc.

I've decided I'm happy with the default settings. (Believe it or not! ^^)

I'm in the same boat. Don't really want to fork out 500 plus for a monitor! I'm hoping to upgrade the 1600x I've got when the new ones are released!

Hoping to get £50/£60 which brings the overall cost down to just under £300 for me.

Decided to manually calibrate and these are what i'm happy with.

Brightness - 30
Contrast - 50
Black tuner - 10

Color temp - Normal.

In the Nvidia control panel, under adjust desktop colour settings:

Brightness - 50
Contrast - 45
Gamma - 0.82

This brings the Gamma down to the 2.2 range. Banding is still there but it's not as bad as when i was calibrating with the Spyder!

Blacks are still nice but can be distinguished a bit better when looking at the black level test (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php)

I'll be sticking with these for the foreseeable.

Any update on your headset?

yea these settings look good turning up blacktuner makes a lot of difference on the blacks i think i will settle with these as well thanks for helping me out :)

i sent a web note yesterday and attached the invoice and barcode they haven't got back to me yet but it looks like they have reopened the promotion so ive resubmitted my application, I think the problem was i uploaded the invoice in PDF format so im gathering they dont accept PDFs. Ive uploaded it in JPEG now and its showing both images now so should get approved.

Yeah. You might need to turn the brightness down on a night etc! They're fine other than that though.

Both mine where JPEG's. Might be the reason why!

Not sure if you had the email from MSI?

We have received an update that there is a severe delay on gift delivery due to the high volume of redemption. And unfortunately your delivery is being affected.

We now open a replacement option - a DS B1 gaming mouse + GH60 gaming headset combo, if you want to receive the gift earlier. This will be arranged by another office so it could be delivered earlier with an estimation of Jul/early August. If you prefer to stick to the GH70 gaming headset, the estimated gift arrival date would be September/October.

hi yes i received this as well i ended up going for the a DS B1 gaming mouse + GH60 gaming headset combo im not going to be selling them anyway as im giving them to my brother. I know the GH60s dont seem to be as good as there not 7.1 surround sound and no RGB lighting but i think there still pretty decent and ive checked a few reviews as well and they seem ok.

What are you doing are you getting the GH60s or hold out for the GH70s?

Yeah, did the same!

@bazman25

Found a review of this one on a Russian Site, and they had calibrated the monitor.

I've tried to replicate the settings in the video the best i can!

Video Overview
Here's an image showing colour temperature of the profiles shipped - https://ibb.co/qMsFdJp
Here's an image of the OSD from the Video - https://ibb.co/NTMWWzP
  • The Delta E figure at the end ideally needs to be under 3
  • Colour temperature should be 6500k-ish - So the default colour temperatures on the User modes aren't too bad.

Calibration

Brightness - 80
Contrast - 50
Black Tuner - 8

Custom Color.
R - 69
G - 65
B - 57

do you prefer these settings? i think the colour banding looks a little better but i think i prefer the manual settings that you did in the nvidia control panel i do still notice some colour banding in games but i think the only way to improve it is to tweak the black tuner down but doing this seems to make the blacks and greys a lot darker

Hard to say.

With these ones, the colours are probably correct, but i feel the black tuner at 8 is too much. (The banding seems to go, but its just too dark) Plus black crush starts to happen.

I've gone back to the NCP ones i did.

I've also opened a support ticket with MSI about the banding. They've said their internal engineers are looking into the issue.

Not sure if you've heard anything?

A company called D&J Henry got in touch with me and told me they'd be dealing with it on behalf of MSI. Said they'd said a blue bag for the monitor box to go in.

It's turned up and the bag is about half the size of what's needed! -_-

I did question if the bag would be big enough and was told it should be!

lol yea i just got mine.. the bag is big enough to fit the monitor pannel but without the box!

Yeah exactly.

They told me a bin bag should be okay, well two of them.

Booked in for collection on Friday.

They also asked me to video/Photograph the fault? Had to explain there isn't a fault and the FW just needs updating

oh dear i dont have much faith with this company! maybe leave a sticky note on the screen saying the FW needs updating

Hmm.

I've photographed the monitor before boxing it up too. Just incase it comes back marked!

Had to set my old Dell 2515h up. Feels so weird not having the curve. The colours do seem a bit more richer on the Dell but, IPS ain't it so, it's to be expected!

wow that was quick! fingers crossed the banding is fixed mines getting picked up on friday.

quick question did you send the stand and leads as well?

Yeah, thankfully. At least if it ever needs doing again it's not too much hassle.

I packed everything up with it yeah, once I figured out what went where etc!
