MSI Optix MAG271CQR - Brief Review

yea bit of a nightmare getting it packed up! just glad i kept the box

So it's back and they've only updated it to V11.

Came back with no 'Protective Cover' either, just the box with a sticker on which i'm not too happy with, considering their new 'Process' insists it's wrapped before you post it.

Noticed a few light scuff/scratch marks on the back that weren't there when i sent it either.

oh thats not good its kind of put me off sending mine back so whats the V11 firmware? does that not solve the color banding?

V11 banding isn't as bad as V7. (Thats the only upside of this haha)

But if they issued V13 that specifically fixes banding, then there must still be issues in 11. Plus im not sure what else has changed between 11 and 13.

@bazman25

They've told me V11 was the latest they had, even though job notes mentioned V13
They say the marks weren't there when it left them. God knows.

I've asked them to pick it up on Monday. It's either them or shipping it off to Poland for MSI to do.

So hopefully, you should have V13 when you get it back!

I bet they would say that... Mine got picked up today and I left a note in the box telling them to update to V13 fw so fingers crossed and you have mentioned it aswell so surely it will get done.
I just can't believe they don't put the fw on there website so we could do it ourselves they do it with motherboards!

Requires a special tool apparently?

All being well, you should get yours back with 13 on. I'll have to just send mine off again next week.

Should have a Colormunki arriving on Monday, so i can properly calibrate it (Found out that Spyders arent the best!)

@bazman25

You heard anything back yet?

I emailed them Friday asking them to take it away and re-do it but they've basically ignored my emails.

I think once the LG reviews comes out, I'll jump ship if they're positive.

Yes it's getting delivered to me today very quick service but I'm not expecting it to be updated to V13 but we will see.
Maybe submit another RMA could try and contact MSI as well see what they say.
Yea I heard there was new LG s out be interesting to see what there like I'm gona stick with this one for now but I would have probably went for the LG if I would have known they were coming out.

Yeah that is quick!

I had asked them to take it away again, they offered so I said yes. They've just ignored my emails? I've contacted MSI.

I've been in touch with the company I purchased it off and just told them I want a refund under the consumer rights act. Not fit for purpose.

It's gone away to be fixed, they claim it's fixed. It's not fixed.

Lost faith in both MSI and D&J Henry.

Let us know what happens when it's back with you!

few pics of banding looks like its still there i think but the colours do look a bit better to me sorry i dont really have a decent camera!

sorry these pics are bad im using my phone its not the best camera in the world!

Yeah it's hard to tell with photographs!

Looks like it's still there. It's a weird monitor. Hence why it can't be calibrated without issues.

hi mate so what did you decide to do with yours in the end?

It's gone back to Box. Along with all documentation between me, MSI and D&J Henry, that involves engineers notes.

I sent them a detailed email explaining why i wasn't happy (Banding, OSD Lockups, In Game Flickering) two of three i mentioned on the RMA to MSI, the engineers notes states the update will have fixed this. It hasn't.

I also provided images of banding on websites i visit/develop, along with images of the Black to white banding where hints of red and green appear.

It's been delivered in the last half hour and they claim they'll assess it.

@bazman25

Bit of an update.

Had an email off them again today and theyve told me the after sales manager has confirmed the monitor is faulty. If i can confirm my address they can ship a replacement out to me.

I've replied and told them that a replacement unit is useless as it's down to the Monitor/Firmware and Panel used.

Plus, the replacement would more than likely ship with a lower FW to the one i sent back, so i'd be worse off!

I've re-iterated that i want a refund.

i did think that might say that but yeah theirs no point getting a replacement as fw.013 doesn't completely fix it im seeing the banding i think there is a slight improvement though

Will see what they come back with.

Managed to email the aftersales manager, he hasn't replied but they've refunded me.

Just wanted to chime in and say these few pages have been both interesting and helpful.

I've just had the monitor delivered today and set it up. I'm not big into setting up colours, etc properly but do always look for profiles and generally have a go (no specialist equipment etc - just following posts like yourselves and eye balling personal preference).

Got it to a stage where i like it - it's probably completely wrong from a colour accuracy point of view mind you (for example I hate "warm" setting and the yellowish tint it's get, so i always use "cool" instead), but it seems fine so far.

Of course reading through these pages has now enlightened me to how stupid MSI are when it comes to frimware. Having to send it off for an update in this day and age? What were they thinking?

As with you guys, im firmware .007 - and if version .013 upwards fixes things then I can't live knowing that so I just filled in the hella confusing MSI form.

By the end (all details correct) it asks if the OS is still installed and even calls it a notebook - did yours read the same? It all seems like a very badly translated page, not a major manufacturer.

For the RMA a bag is mentioned on this thread. Is it not sent in the box which is actually safe and secure?

Any further insights and answers to the above would be appreciated, and once again thank you for the information so far! Been extremely helpful.

Yeah that form is aimed at Laptops. Not sure why it's not a generic form. Fill in what you can.

The company that got in touch with me told me I needed to send it to them. I had the original box still so it made it easier, but to cover the box in a heavy duty bin bag. (Basically so that when it's being transported, nobody can see what it is, even though they shipped it back with no covering)

I went for the Aorus AD27QD.

First one from Amazon had an issue with the top right hand corner looking a lot cooler than the rest of the screen.

The second one I got from OCUK as Amazing weren't selling it at that point. The panel uniformity is 100% The lower left and bottom in general looks cooler than the top. Noticable on Grey/white backgrounds. Not as bad as the first one though.

I'm still in two minds whether to send it back or not!

I've gone full circle and decided to return it. Shouldn't have to mess around like this with a new item and from what has been said above and elsewhere it doesn't fix it.

I've ordered a acer Nitro VG270UP instead. Heard bad things and heard a lot of good things too. Will update you on that once it arrives if you like. If that's not great I'm gonna hold out for the new nano ups from LG late next month.

Same panel as the Gigabyte Aorus now, but, the Acer's are known for screen flickering. An issue i haven't seen on the Gigabyte so far.

The monitor market is a complete mess!
