MSI P55 Series *Official* Motherboard thread

I don't have the money or space :( already flooded with computers of some type (dead onces/old onces and my own formor gaming rig

Some images of the 3 SKU MSI will launch:

MSI give 55% discount on limited stock on all P55 boards :D

Come launch day, MSI will be knocking a massive 55 per cent off the asking price of its two range-topping boards. Consequently, the P55-GD65, with a suggested retail price of £139.99, will be made available for as little as £63! The top-end P55-GD80, meanwhile, would normally fetch £189 and could be yours during the promotion for just £85.50.

As mentioned by a well known UK review site ;)

1. Kudos to MSI for basically hijacking the P55 launch with this discount thing - ASUS who?

2. I like the voltage test points on the board. Anyone with a simple meter can now get an accurate voltage reading rather than what they think is set in the BIOS. That's a good idea (I know it's not a new one, but on an £85 motherboard it's unheard of).

3. The OCGenie thing looks like an automatic overclock gimmick. If you can't do better than 20% overclock in the BIOS yourself then surely something is wrong somewhere?

4. All those heatsinks look likely to block bigger coolers around the CPU socket.

5. By making this big discount thing an issue MSI have basically ensured there will be a huge installed base of MSI GD-65 and GD-80 users to pimp the boards when the price goes back up, just like the ASUS P5 ranges always have done.

I really do have to hand it to MSI, lets hope that we're all lucky next week and that it's a good clocker as well as cheap.

Do we know as yet what coolers are going to work with socket 1156? Do the "right" coolers already exist, or are we waiting on announcements of those, too? Or will socket 775 coolers fit socket 1156 boards?

I think that S1156 is different to both S775 and S1366 which is sheer ******* genius from Intel - all we need is another bag of bits when we buy a cooler:rolleyes:

Hmm, presumably, I'm not going to be the only one needing a cooler along with my i5/P55 CPU/mobo. ;)

Searching for "1156" on the whole of OcUK's cooler range, the only things that show up are some Zalman coolers that seem pretty generic.

I'm using 4 bolts and a water block;)

Luckily the S1156 is between the S775 and S1366 so any cooler that has a 'slide' cut in it eg. EK Supreme is fine. A new backing plate is required though.

They're also set to release the "Big Bang" P55 board incorporating Lucid's Hydra. As regards the cooler brackets, Noctua are releasing free 1156 brackets to customers for their existing coolers.

Interesting. I do like Noctua. Though I'd still like to be able to buy the thing I'll need along with the CPU and mobo, rather than having to wait for an extra bit from Noctua. :)

I'm sure they'll ship with the 1156 brackets at launch, though if you've bought one previously then Noctua give you the option of a free bracket.

Aye, it makes sense. This is looking pretty good, then -- as long as the CPUs are as reasonably priced. :)
