MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition/OC - Problem

No ziggy i think you can only use the ati overdrive tool. same principle though i imagine.

Had a quick go of Blops earlier on and was fine for around 20 mins then i got this.

One hard reset later and windows loaded up ok. Im thinking you were all right about the RMA with this. I was warned about ATI's drivers but after having a 5850 with no problems whatsoever i thought people were exaggerating. Starting to agree with them. :(

Hmm.

1)So your saying its the hardware & its needs RMA, 2)then your saying you had no problems with drivers & 5850, 3) then your saying its the drivers again which are the problem which contradicts with 1 & 2 because others moan about drivers.

Anyway Driver Has stop responding is very common because it can be triggered by a great many things.

Ram incompatibly [memtest will not always pick up that one] Evidence , Timings Or going faulty.

GPU,CPU & system overclocking.

Mobo BIOS.

Faulty PSU or just not giving enough juice to the GPU .

GPU overheating & just plan faulty GPU.

Conflict with other SW.

Of coarse its possible with specific setups & specific games with specific In game or CCC settings which are known to crop up now & then but are very rare, I have never had that issue & neither any of my customers or friends who i have built for & likely because none of them OC or mess around with the PC like enthusiasts do & hence why enthusiasts get more Driver Has stop responding issue than any other group.

Seeing as its happening in such a wide range of games common ones its very likely its not the drivers & the fact that you tried different drivers with the same result.

No I don't know for certain that it is the hardware. Hence mentioning about RMA'ing it like most have said. I had no problems whatsoever with the 5850 that's true. yet i have also heard from various site's and forums that AMD's catalyst drivers are crap. So Is it a hardware problem? Or a software one? Or maybe even a problem with another component. :(

That is what i am trying to find out. After all i don't want to waste my time sending the card back to ocuk only to get billed for it being fine and it being a software or alternate component problem.

Could a dodgy hard drive cause these crashes? As leavintg the side pannel off i can hear like a fast ticking/clicking noise when a game is on so might it be the hd failing and while games are installed and being played from it that's causing the crash???

Did the format and everything seemed fine till this again.

I install all games to a samsung HD103si 1TB SATA drive.

This don't look too good. Did a quick scan but found no errors.

Wow that is bad Arith, Not at all normal for any error. With my screen i have only seen it like that twice but yours looks a lot worse. either way both cards from same stable so thats not a good sign.

Been waiting for one of OCUK's staff to take a look at it both in this thread and in the thread i posted in the customer service section but so far zip :(

Sorry that we can't help you dude :(

Try giving OCUK a call. They are usually quite good on the phone. Report back to us what happens.

I had the same issue playing games with a 5770 turned out it was faulty gpu memory gave the exact same lines as your picture

Well still getting the lockups but im talking with ocuk about the rma now but i did come across this regarding my motherboard and thinking it might have some connection to it all but can't say for sure.

This is my mobo, the Asus X58 Sabertooth TUF, bought it at the same time as the card. and looking inside i noticed there is a cap over half of one of the 12v power sockets for the cpu.

moboquestion.jpg

It currently has a 4-pin in there but not the 8 that it can take. I was wondering if this could be related to the issue. I would have to strip out the mobo to get at it as it's incredibly fiddly to get to with my hands being blocked by the huge corsair A70 cooler so was wondering if it's worth trying this out?

Been running benchmarks all day and all seemed fine asside from one lockup on the Lost Plantet 2 demo and i got this.

So you guys think this could after all this be a lack of power getting to the cpu? in one of the reviews of the board it said

"Also if possible, use both 8-pin CPU power connectors on the motherboard so you know you can feed the CPU enough power"

Hmmm the plot thickens.

From what I can see your PSU has a 4 pin and an 8 pin connector.

The "easiest" test is to remove the cap and connect the 8 pin connector and see if it solves your problem.

Replaced the 8pin power plug to the cpu (see picture above) today and tried things and still had the same problem. Decided to have a look at the memory timings in the BIOS and set them manually instead of on auto and also downclock the card a second time to 800 / 1200mhz and (so far) it's been fine.

Going to have to spend the day testing to make sure but so far all good. Which points to either a faulty overclock on the card or a bios issue regarding dram timings for auto.

I've had the Twin Frozr II version of this card since March, and can safely say I haven't had any of the problems you've described on mine. I have had a couple of crashes to desktop, but that was playing Fallout: New Vegas (which isn't the most stable game on earth anyways).

Might be worth trying to re-seat the card though, as when I first installed mine it was reporting it as running at only 4x PCI-E speed. A quick shutdown of the PC and re-seating of the graphics card, and it was reported correctly at 16x PCI-E. Must have had the contacts on the card slightly misaligned in the PCI-E socket, even though it felt like it was correctly positioned the first time I fit it. It's worth a try just incase.

hi guys...
i was looking for someone that have the same problem as me and i found this topic...
i have msi 6950 twin frozr power edition oc and i have exactly the same problem with it...
i did too underclock my card to 800mhz and its working fine...
but when i play a game at stock 850mhz and the game is a heavy one after 10 or 15 min i get the display driver stop working and freezes about 20 sec...
i figured its the heat but 58 c is not that much! is it?
in crysis 2 it was good for 30 min but in dead island i get the freez in 5 minutes!!!!!!!!!
i dont know what to do with it?

You need to make a profile in MSI Afterburner (came with the card) that sets the card to 800mhz x 1250mhz and save it to one of the numbers (1 to 5) and make sure you click on "apply overclocking at system startup"

This should eliminate the problem. It has worked fine for me now for a good while. No more display driver stopped working nonsense :)

Like this.

thank u...
but i dont think its a solution!! dont u think? weve got this card for its gpu power on 850mhz... not on 800mhz!
u better check ur power supply too...
at first i thought that its a heat problem but 56 or 58 isnt hot for the card...
i have an redmax 600w... and i think its not enough...
one of my friend told me that if its not ur power then its ur MOBO...
have tried to unlock ur card?
when i've got my card its originaly have a lot head room for overclockin-gpu till 1300mhz and memory till 1800- on second mode bios!!!
when i checked it seems it shouldnt have that much headroom for overclock...

i did check the card with furmark 1.9.1 and it was an hour on test on xtreme burn-in and it passed the test without any problem!!!
i checked my ram and cpu too with IntelBurnTest and they had no problem...
when they didnt have any problem individually then whats the problem?
i have 2 idea:
1.power supply
2.MOBO
