MSI to offer 55% launch-day discount on P55 motherboards

Can you use i7 on these boards then?

Yes, but only the socket 1156 i7 8-series. Not the older, socket 1366 i7 9-series.

WJA96 is right; whilst the MSI board deal is gonna make launch day upgrades pretty cheap the prices of all the other boards will have to fall as well to make this a compelling upgrade over 1366 i7.

Im not buying cheap stuff i just dont want to pay silly prices for stuff, this board being a good example , why pay 150 quid for one when this one is good enough for 80 ? :)

i thought this board would support i7 / all the other P55 boards listed here state:

CPU: Intel Core i7/Core i5 Processors (Socket LGA1156)

im confused ? lol

EDIT: ah so it will only support a "newer" version of i7 ?

The i7xx and i8xx series are S1156 whereas the older i9xx series are S1366.

An i920 with an ASUS P6T and 6Gb of Viper 1600MHz RAM is the same price as an i860 with an ASUS P55 Deluxe and 4Gb of slower G.SKill RAM.

Unless you're buying the cheapest stuff possible, it makes no sense to go P55 at the moment in my view.

Yes, I think we all know this already, it's just the lure of new shiny shiny that is drawing us all in. :D

Anyone seen OcUK's £130 this week's deal on a Q9450  No one seems to care about that....

... shiny shiny new new ... That's where it's at

But taking Hyperthreading and Triple channel aren't really used at all in gaming a 750 + P55 is basically a 920 + X58 without those unused extras.

Thus shaving off a good % of the platform cost, for very very similar gaming performance.

according to some tests, gd65 is awful overclocker

gd80 is designed for overclocking though

also some people don't recommend to get msi at all

so im gonna get the gd80

Don't be confused - read the description. It's pretty clear really.

I guess it is but i wasnt aware there are two different socket designs for the i7 but its been a few years since i upgraded my CPU so im out of the loop so to speak, im still running a e6600  lol

I will translate the conclusion:

Motherboard p55 gd65 was looking good only until we started to do actual things. It didn't demonstrate expected overclocking potential with new CPUs because of bad power system, which even with enabled Load-Line calibration can't cut down the voltage loss. It was also 50% slower than needed according to EVEREST, and 15-40% slower in other benchmarks. I just can't recommend this product for purchase to anyone, only thing I can recommend - is for MSI to discontinue the board until they fix all problems. Rating - 1 out of 5.

Has MSI threatened everyone with death or something not to break their NDA?!?

Think of all the money you'll make if you're the first to put them up. :p

blow it. looks like i'll wait it out. if the 920 is still around at £200 at xmas with budget boards I'm going to go that way again unless the s1156 cpu / mobo prove their worth and provide a decent saving. Although both the machines that need overhauling from the ground up mainly game they also so a lot of image work, stills mostly but some video.

good luck with the lottery guys.

yup either one of the MSI boards look a bargain, now please OCUK put em up so I can order then go back to sleep (nightwork)

I was more interested in the low temps @ 4 GHz plus the fact that it was only using 2 phases of the power system @ 4 Ghz
