MSI X570 Tomahawk WiFi Bios Flash button, how to tell if it's worked?

Went out today and picked up a sandisk cruzer something (16gb usb 2.0) as a last ditch attempt.. the only thing that happens when I press the flash button is the board powers up and the white led flashes 3 times then stays lit .. which I believe means the board can’t read the file. Does this with the usb stick that worked last night.

amd7674 - what you describe sounds right.. think the board reboots with a successful flash.

did you try to clear CMOS? as per your mobo's manual

With CPU out try to clear CMOS (look in the manual... page 40 or something). The key is to find OLD USB 2.0 drive. It doesn't matter if you format your usb 3.x sticks to FAT32. Maybe try to buy cheap usb 2.0 1-8gb drive. Try everyhting you can before sending your mobo back to be checked.

Did a CMOS reset by shorting the jumper.. also took the battery out overnight and tried with fresh eyes this morning. Tried everything in various combos.

The only thing I haven’t tried is posting with an older zen.. don’t have anyone local who can loan one though.

Hate giving in but this board has more resistance than i have willpower :)

Try formatting the USB stick using rufus (I've read somewhere, it worked for people)

Don't give up YET !!!! Try this (at your own risk of course :P)

Used rufus today mate, version 3.6 (on the new stick I grabbed from Argos).

99% sure I got v14 on the board last night as the white led flashed for 7-10 minutes then the board restarted. Never got that CPU debug light to go out though.

Please follow the rufus settings from the reddit link I posted above.

Can confirm, rufus worked flawlessly for me after windows formatter left me with CPU debug led and no post, literal black magic.

Found that post and that’s what made me get in the car :) and head to Argos to try a new 16gb usb 2.0 stick.. used those settings but still no joy.

Board just does the ‘3 white flash’ then solid white now no matter what combo I throw at it.

Might have a cup of tea and have another go, spent 4+ hours fighting it so far though

Still getting nowhere - have 3 USB keys and none of them will flash the board (even the one that worked last night).

Think that I may need something stronger than tea!

A battered old usb was the only one that worked (tbc) for me. Happy to throw it in the post to you tomorrow to give it a try..

Worked like a treat for me. first time. Took about 4/5 minutes.

Make sure you format in fat32. AND enable Master Boot Record on the USB stick, just to be sure.

FYI I didn't use rufus. There's a few simple cmd lines to type. Just you tube it.

Short and sweet. Just make sure you type the command "clean" after selecting the disk. I formatted it to fat 32, then had to again after.

Big thank you to Nambola, a true legend - he offered to lend me his USB key with tested format and v14 BIOS. Tried flashing my mobo using this, same process and key.. no luck on my mobo.

My mobo just switches on 2 seconds after pressing the flash button, fan spins and RGB goes .. the white flash LED flashes 3 times and stays on continuously. Safe to say my x570 tomahawk is not right and is going back to the shop.

5 USB keys later and many hours.. defeated but least I know its a faulty mobo.

Weird fault for a mobo. Good luck homie!

Well the 500GB 2.5" SATA drive + Sata<>USB3 convertor cable worked fine (MBR, with 8GB FAT32 partition on it) with the MSI.ROM on it and I was able to POST fine with the new 5800X :)

I had an attempt to do this today, albeit a slightly different board (B550M Mortar Wifi) and don't feel certain that it worked. I can't test that yet as I'm in the 5600X queue.

Could you guys run over the steps I followed and observed below and tell me if things seem OK?

Motherboard completely unpopulated and taken straight from the box.
Connected only 24 pin MB and 8 pin CPU connectors.
Inserted USB drive (with MSI.ROM file) into flashback port.
Short pressed bios flashback button.
Red LED began to flash @ 2 times per second, consistently over a 6 minute period.
Red Led extinguished but I assume the board did not reset as the PSU fan did not stop/start again.
CPU debug Led remained lit throughout and after the process had finished.

it sounds like it didn't' flash properly. You need usb 2.0 stick and some say it is not necessary clear your CMOS prior. (check your mobo manual for it). The key is the mobo should reboot on its own upon successful flashing.

Did my bios flash tonight, however I get a white flashing light when I activate the flash. First couple of times it only flashed 3 times then nothing, but then I renamed the bios file to MSI.ROM.140 & it seemed to complete, although not sure if it rebooted as I had to leave the room for a few mins.

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to give it another try and see if anything changes.

One thing that puzzled me was this:
I plug in the 24 and 8 pin, then power on the PSU via the rocker switch. The PSU fan does not spin and nothing on the MB lights up to show that it's powered.

Once I press the bios flashback switch, the PSU fan then starts, the CPU debug Led illuminates and the flashing appears to begin. Weird

Edit: I've just rewatched the video below and my experience was just as shown in the demonstration. Flashing red Led approximately twice per second followed by the Led going out. There is no mention of the board restarting and that's also not mentioned in the MSI user manual.

I guess I'll soon know when my CPU arrives and I'll report back with the final outcome!

I believe you need to remove the ".140" from the filename, so it should be named "MSI.ROM". You'll receive a warning from Windows saying that doing this could make the file unusable but it's OK to continue and ignore that warning. That's what I've seen instructed in every tutorial I've watched.

Yeah, I did that but just got 3 white light flashes. Leaving the140 it seemed to complete. Won't know I suppose until the build is finished.
