MSI X570 Tomahawk WiFi Bios Flash button, how to tell if it's worked?

I semi bricked my board after stupidly trying to update the BIOS of my X570 Tomahawk through MSI dragon centre. Which after it downloaded and 'updated' rebooted me to a completely dead system (although it did turn on).

Can confirm the Sandisk Ultra Flair 3.0 16gb USB stick is definately compatible and successfuly bought the board back to life using the button on the back.

USB was formatted as per normal in FAT32 in windows, and renamed BIOS file to MSI.ROM as per instructions.

I had to do the procedure 3 times before it would come back to life though!

1st time it the white LED on the back flash for a few minutes then seemed to get faster, but never stopped.

2nd time it just kept flashing again.

3rd attempt it flashed took a few minutes and then rebooted itself back into a working non bricked state :) Bit of a faff, but so glad it didnt die! I'm sure only i was stupid enough to attempt a windows based BIOS update, but for anyone reading, NEVER use Dragon Centre to update your BIOS, EVER.

Yeah, I did that but just got 3 white light flashes. Leaving the140 it seemed to complete. Won't know I suppose until the build is finished.

Looks like we are in the same situation, waiting for a cpu to see if we did it successfully. Good luck and I hope it all worked out for you.

Just got my x570 tomahawk today. Got my random 16gb usb3.0 drive formatted fat 32 ready to go. All it does is white led flashing 3 times and than nothing.
Gonna go and look for different sticks tomorrow.
Annoying experience at best.

yeap, you will need an OLD usb 2.0 stick... I have 6-7 usb 3.x at home and only one usb 2.0 (which works).

Idk if it was different stick or just because I used Rufus but i think it worked????. Don't really know what is the process. It flashed with mobo on for like 5 min, turned off and turned on with ez debug CPU led lit

Yeap, that's what I see on my two mobos without CPUs. I'm planning on trying using 3.0 usb stick formatted with Rufus that didn't work before. However I will do that once I get my backordered 5900x delivered (hopefully in 2020) :-) By then there could be AGESA patch D BIOS out.

For those up and running with this board and a 5000 CPU. Are you seeing any weird temps reported for the CPU?

Mine is 27C in BIOS at idle. At idle in windows I am seeing 32C (great), but it shifts between 32-65C in an instant- still at idle. In fact moving the fan profile in MSI Dragon Centre from performance/balanced at 65C to Silent immediately drops temp back to 32C!

Seeing odd temps in HWinfo and AMD Master apps. Fans settings 'normal'; cooling with 360 Arctic AIO. Wondering if the bios is glitchy or if I mounted the CPU badly. Scratching head....

Do you guys know what happens in the event of a flashback being unsuccessful.

I'm wondering if the existing bios that is on the chip remains intact or could get only part overwritten and therefore corrupted?

Somewhere along the line my board gave up taking a BIOS flash via flashback process.

After fighting with it for a few days in the end it wouldn’t take a flash at all... new mobo arrived yesterday and it flashed properly using the same key and is up and running perfectly now.

There do seem to be a small number of people who can’t flash their boards despite using the correct process. From what I have seen the symptoms of this are 2 flashes then a solid on the led by the flash USB port.. seems this means mobo needs replacing.

Got a noob question, the latest MSI bios version is a zip.file, obviously you need to unzip this but that is a folder, with 2 files contained. Is it the folder you rename to MSI.ROM or one of the two files, and if so which one?

EDIT, nvm I figure it out, of the two files one is a text file, so it'll be the other one, got a USB 2.0 flash drive, change the file to MSI.ROM (with file extensions on).

Figures crossed this works becuase I have seen a lot of people having problems getting this to work.

I have this board with a 5900x and just can’t get it to work at all have tried flashing the bios so many times...
i just did it with 5900x three days ago, did it in 2 tries. Is the light flashing behind the usb port ? It should be slow flashes for a minute into faster flashes for 2 minutes. After it finishes flashes leave it on for 20 minutes as it supposedly has to restart. I did not wait the 20 minutes the first time so i had no display when i tried running it. I flashed 2nd time with all the components and switched to a 2.0 usb stick.

I’ll try again and leave it for a while... this is an annoying experience half tempted just to give the board back and get something else! I’ve always had bad experiences with MSI in the past but haven’t built a PC in 7 years and was recommend this board.

Light flashing and back and even restarted at one point just not detecting the CPU at all

I reseated the cpu and now it’s working... this motherboard came with no cpu cover is this normal? Maybe it was a return and just by luck it’s working for me now maybe I dislodged some dirt off the socket

Took me 5 hours to finally get it to work tonight after I done ****** up with a ram clock gone wrong, the same USB that failed numerous time eventually decided to work after persisting (the other 4 I tried that also failed, might have worked eventually too, I'm not curious enough to test that theory though)

@Vegeta don't think mine came with a cover either so I guess it's normal ?

I got mine working first atttemp.

I can only say what I did.

Firstly download latest driver from MSI website, it comes in a folder, which contains 2 files, ignore th text file, its the other file, get that and rename it to MSI.ROM - make sure you have file extensions turned on in windows when you rename it, otherwise it'll actually rename it MSI.ROM.151 (or something)

I took a Sandisk 32gb USB 2.0 flash pen I bought on ebay for about £5, I didnt format that or anything, literally copied the renamed file to it.

Then motherboard, I plugged the main motherboard power cable in, and 8 pin CPU power, the RAM was installed and some other auxileries (UBS headers, etc) but no CPU in.

Plugged USB into the flash port, hit the USB flash button on the rear.

It was VERY hard to see, but if you look behind (where you plug the USB stick in) you could just see around the gap, a WHITE led flashing. This flashing kept going for a few minutes.

I then went an made a coffee, when I returned the white LED had stopped flashing but the board was still powered. Apparently, the white LED will stop flashing after a while, the board will restart itself, and you know its done, I obviously missed that bit! Anyway, I left the board running a further 20 minutes jsut to be sure (this probably wasnt necessary) but hey ho it worked first time.
