MSI X570 Tomahawk WiFi Bios Flash button, how to tell if it's worked?

Not sure if it's been posted before but I had no luck using a USB3.0 memory stick. No issues when I formatted a USB2 to FAT32 and upgraded my bios.

Hope this helps someone :)

Just got my parts this week and started building yesterday. Posting this from my new pc (5900X).

This thread has been very helpful, but just to add and make it clear for people trying a new build I'll summarise what I've done to make it work. I had everything installed except RAM and managed to flash successfully, so I don't think it's necessary to only have certain components installed, I'll start from the minimum you'll need to flash your motherboard.

1. Ready up a memory stick (preferably USB2.0 and one that will light up on load) with the right bios that supports your new CPU (minimum version 7C84v14 for 5000 series). Get the right bios from here: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/MAG-X570-TOMAHAWK-WIFI# (Download -> Bios).

2. Make sure to follow the first 33 seconds of this video to ready up your stick, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTkXunUAriE.

3. Install your motherboard + CPU + Cooler + PSU.

4. Connect the ATX_1 and CPU_1 connectors to your motherboard.

5. Insert your thumbstick in the port that's marked for flashing bios (top left port when the case is standing on its feet).

6. Make sure PSU is ON and hold the little button above the USB port with a sticky object (I did with a pen) for about 5 seconds, PC should turn on by itself.

7. Check if you can see a white light blinking and/or your USB blinking/lighting up.

8. Leave it on for about 6 mins, on successful flash it will stop and reboot by itself. Leave on for about 5 mins to be sure. On an unsuccessful flash, the lights will stop blinking (no auto-restart). If this is the case try another USB stick or retry with the same.

9. Install the rest of the components and see if it POSTS.

10. Profit.

IMPORTANT NOTE: My motherboard wouldn't POST (Debug CPU LED was on forever) until I actually inserted my RAM. I had everything installed except RAM when I started flashing. I never took anything out/in during flashing and thought it didn't work, RAM came in late and when inserted everything worked (didn't do any flashing in between).

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: Make sure you connect a GPU and connect your screen to that to see if it POSTS. My HDMI port on the board never worked and trust me I tried like 20 times.

IMPORTANT NOTE 3: I only had a 32GB 3.0 USB stick and a 32GB 2.0 USB stick available, the 2.0 seemed the most reliable.

Hi Guys,

First ever build and just did the BIOS update on my x570 Tomahawk but I'm not too sure if it worked.

Ive dowloaded the correct update and renamed MSI.ROM on a usb 2.0 drive

I connected the MOBO to the ATX 24 pin and cpu cable on the psu, inserted the drive to the flash usb and pressed the flash button to start the bios update.

As my usb drive does not have light, I turned the living room lights down to see what was happening. The White Light on the IO shield was flashing for approx 4-5 minutes then stopped. I couldn't recall it restarting (don't think it did) but left it another 10 minutes just to make sure. Has this BIOS update been successful, so I can start the build?

Also, just to note the RGB lights at the opposite end to the IO shield were changing colour throughout, if that makes a difference or not.

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob, congrats on your first build. The best sign to tell if it worked is that the machine restarted by itself after flashing for about 5-6 minutes. If you are not 100% sure, you can actually do it again (the BIOS is not going to break by doing that).

Other than that, I started updating my BIOS and had all components already plugged in except for RAM. Beware that the Debug EZ CPU LED was ON when starting my machine until I plugged in my RAM.

Don't be afraid of starting your build, you can still flash even with components already plugged in. The only component that's a hassle to remove is the CPU+Cooler.

So make absolutely sure that your CPU is inserted correctly, remove all plastic between your CPU and CPU cooler. Apply thermal paste correctly, not too much and not too little. Never start your PC without your CPU fan connected etc.

As a last tip, make sure you connect your screen to your GPU when testing for POST, the onboard HDMI port doesn't work unless your processor has an integrated GPU.

@Amplifix

Noticed you are using a RTX 3080. Did you have to change PCI-E to Gen 3 or 4 or did you leave it on Auto?

Would like to run my 3070 on Gen 4 but had to change it to Gen 3 using my brothers GT 1030 and if it doesn't work i will have to borrow it again.

My flash attempt rebooted 3 times using the latest beta bios then stopped, no idea if its done or not, will put it all together tomorrow to find out.

4 hours, 7 different USB drives and I was going to give up. I found a SD card to usb(barely working) and put a 32gb micro SD card in it which actually worked.. I pressed the button and expected the usual 3 flashes of the LED but the motherboard fan and lights come on with the BIOS flash LED flashing away. Rebuilt the computer after stripping it down to try and get the BIOS to update, installed windows and it’s working perfectly with 5900x.

Not sure why but looking through this thread and all the other topics/threads on every other website some people have to test loads of different USB drives until it works wither others getting it first try. Very temperamental.

Went out today and picked up a sandisk cruzer something (16gb usb 2.0) as a last ditch attempt.. the only thing that happens when I press the flash button is the board powers up and the white led flashes 3 times then stays lit .. which I believe means the board can’t read the file. Does this with the usb stick that worked last night.

amd7674 - what you describe sounds right.. think the board reboots with a successful flash.

Hi,

i’m just about to update my bios for x570 tomohawk and 5600x - did u manage to do it in the end? i’m going to be using a sandisk cruiser 2.0 16gb - any tips?

My mobo installed the bios update in around 5 minutes or so and didn’t reboot after. I was panicking it hadn’t worked as people are saying it needs to reboot.

I took the chance and built it anyway and it worked as the 5600x was recognised straight away.

Thank you i’ll give it a go my usb stick doesn’t have a light which is annoying but yeah

Thanks for adding that information. I've updated my board and it did everything described in the steps apart from ever restarting which has had me worried while I wait for a cpu to arrive. After hearing what you mentioned, I'm just going to build and see what happens.

It should be fine. You can always flash it again when it’s built if you need to

Neither has mine, so keep watching the white light on the back of the io shield. It should take around 4-5 minutes for the install

Make sure your usb pen drive is 2.0 too
Hi i’m doing it right now - near the usb’s it flashed for 3-5 mins then stopped but i’ve still got a white led next to 24pin lit! is it done or no

Hi sorta need advice asap if you can - did everything right and it flashed for about 3-5 mins but it didn’t restart but I don’t know if i missed it or not. There’s a solid white led signalling cpu still on - I don’t know whether to try again or it’s done help
