MSI's pricing for R9 290/290X - OUCH

At £350-£400 I'll be looking for a R9 290 (non-X) to go with my new Haswell rig. At more than that, I'll stick with my 6950 until I find a game that really needs more grunt.

They will when people start overclocking them to higher clockspeeds than the 290X. The difference in performance when both cards are overclocked could be as close as 5%.

Seeing as the 290 AND 290X are a simultaneous release I find it doubtful AMD would even consider letting the cards have the same potential.

A part of me reckons AMD will put some arbitrary clock-block on the lesser 290.

There a new Sapphire 290x pre order at $591.62 on a certain site...so maybe it wont be too bad like some think?

Not sure if i can post links to other selling sites?

Guys where are you basing this "add 50 quid" sentence from?

MSI have said the 280X will be 279 euros and funnily enough that translates to the same price the msi 280x actually does cost on OCUK right now.

The 290X will be around £550 and the 290 will be around £440.

The issue with any price tag seen is right at the end if AMD increase it which they are most likely waiting on once the BF4 adverts For sale and shops/media/planet turn into gibberish wrecks with how awesome is that, AMD can increase the price.

Old classic Sales pitch.

All it takes is one game to kick start Intel/AMD/Nvidia Sales....

Perhaps like in the old days, no idea if anyone still does this or it may not work out cost effective ?

Get some Ocuk member who travelling to USA, buy a few R290Xs when the pound is highest value, and then you get non ripp off UK prices. Perhaps find a manufacturer with world wide warranty, I ain't sure so that is what you young blood to figure it all out !

Well the R290x release coincides with the potential collapse of the American economy, so it might just work out!

If they are a surprise and are a lot faster than my 780s then I'm going to see what the non ref models are priced at because AMDs ref coolers are horrible. I made the mistake of buying a Gigabyte 7970 ref at launch and it was like a hairdryer above 40% fan speed. I would think a fair assessment of pricing would be to go off the non ref models as,unless I'm completely off, that is what most people will buy?

Just remember what happened with the 9xxx AMD CPUs.
If it's too expensive, don't buy it.

That's the thing though, people will still buy it. With Nvidia throwing out silly numbers at launch (Titan), if the R290x is anywhere near as good as it's hyped up to be, it'll seem like a bargin. Despite the fact we all know it's still over priced. In a weird way, Nvidia has done AMD a favour.

I would imagine that a fair percentage of the flagship cards will end up being watercooled and most watercooling peeps want a 100% reference card for block compatibility.

The 280x coolers seem to be way better. Quieter and cooler than previous cards.
