MSI's pricing for R9 290/290X - OUCH

nobody can put a price on it yet because AMD havnt even put a price on it yet...

and untill that time, there's no point arguing/debating over it because no one is right at this time :p

but my guess is 400-450 lol ;)

Which is ~£150.

The gap between the 280x and 290 if these rumoured prices is true will be more like £250.

There is around £200 between 770 and 780 versions of, for example, EVGA's SC ACX.

280X goes for mid-£200s, 290 (according to these prices) will cost mid-£400s. Also a £200 difference.

Personally, I think it's too big a gap. But AMD, like Nvidia, will be able to justify it because the 290, like the 780, is a new card, while those below it are just rebrands.

The problem then becomes the massive market gap AMD leave between R9 280X and R9 290.

No more of a problem than Nvidia's gap between the 770 and the 780.

Ignoring Titan, you need to take into account the GTX780 has been available since May. If AMD simply come in at a similar price and performance then what is the point? For AMD to make an impression they will need to seriously undercut Nvidia's GTX780 pricing or give markedly higher performance for a similar price.

If R9 290 equals GTX780 in performance it needs to be ~ £100 cheaper IMHO because of the following reasons.

  1. It's an AMD card and like it or not Nvidia does have a higher brand recognition
  2. It is 5 months late to the game since GTX780 was released. What was the incentive to wait?
  3. Even from images alone it is clear that a reference GTX780 has a much higher quality cooler
All of these points must be factored in to any AMD pricing scenarios for R9 290. If R9 290X is faster than GTX780 then for the exact same reasons it will need to match it for price.

Well put and I agree entirely. The time angle is especially true.

AMD need a few more good generations yet to really disable the market handicap they have compared to nVidia. They're on the right path though.

Yeah AMD should undercut Nvidia by a good £50 for 290x, then again the same AMD initially charged £800 for the 7970 and £700 for a naff CPU and then having huge price cuts a few week later. AMD should do what they do best and offer the best price to performance from the off.

Think you mean 7990 there Raven

I think the days of AMD/ATI releasing the best at a cut price are gone now :)

Fudzilla reporting that the 290X will cost $700, which would be around £525 inc VAT. They're also saying that this is probably the Battlefield 4 edition price, which I believe Gibbo said would likely carry a £20-30 premium. So, best case scenario we might see the non-BF4 version for £499.

I remember the 7970 being £450+ at lunch but I don't recall it ever going anywhere near as high as £800.

The 290x does look as if it will significantly under cut the Titan by some margin.

AMD have already stated they're not aiming at the same price point as Titan, so we don't need to worry about figures that high. However, ~£600 isn't near the Titan either.

Partners give us the nod

According to a couple of AMD AIB partners that we will not reveal for obvious reasons, AMD currently plans a US $699 price tag for the Radeon R9 290X graphics card.

It is most likely that AMD talks about BattleField 4 Edition price, although most of our sources agree that most if not all Radeon R9 290X graphics cards will actually be BF4 Edition cards, at least until AMD runs out of BF4 codes from EA/DICE. Some partners also noted that despite the fact that AMD currently talks about US $699 price tag, it can quite easy change it at the last minute.

AMD is doing a great job in keeping the information regarding the R9 290X under wraps and the reason behind the mystery of the R9 290X price tag is to keep Nvidia from repositioning its GTX 780 graphics card. The US $699 price tag puts it in line with the US $729 leak on Newegg.com.

The US $699 price tag for the R9 290X seems reasonable considering the rumored performance. Although most people hoped for US $599 or similar price, it simply does not make financial sense for AMD. The bottom line is that it can compete with pricier Nvidia cards and AMD is not a charity.

In any case, we will know for sure next week as the R9 290X should crawl from under the NDA veil on October 15th.

Nothing new, as Gibbo said the other day. AMD can change the price at the last minute.

At $699 it's pricey, given 7970 was $549 at launch and could be had for around £450 inc VAT applying the same ratio gives a price of £573 for the 290X
