my urban hybrid is needing repaired

I need new brake levers, rear gear lever, new cassette + chain and front deraileur

the stuff on it atm is :

http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-GB/bikes/lifestyle/2467/32864/

  • SHIFTERS Shimano Alivio 24 speed Rapidfire Plus
  • FRONT MECH Shimano C051
  • REAR MECH Shimano Alivio
  • BRAKES Giant Root hydraulic disc, 160mm rotors
  • BRAKE LEVER Giant Root
  • CASSETTE Shimano HG30 11-32
  • CHAIN Shimano HG50
  • CRANKS Shimano FC-M191 28/38/48
  • BOTTOM BRACKET Cartridge

basically I could do with buying a full groupset and replacing the lot and I know nothing about MTB groups so a little help would be apreciated

can someone spec me a groupset

I use the bike solely for work these days in all weather so I would like some thing kind of mid range that will last but not cost the £450 the LBS quoted

What's your budget?

What actually needs replacing? I would guess the shifters and mechs are ok? why do you want to replace the brake levers?

Could you get away with just replacing the chain/cassete/jockey wheels and chainrings?

heres a run down of the bike

R.H. shifter need replaced - its totally gone
Both brake levers need replacing (the ball that pushs the piston snapped off on both but I've welded them for now)
Rear cassette is just about wrecked on the 11t
Front mech keeps sticking
Chain is slightly stretched
headset needs new bearings (not in grp set)

I was just thinking that because so much needs replaced I may as well get a full groupset , its currently an 8 spd set up but I notice theres a lot more 9 spd kit out there

budget is probably around £200 ish - If I can get a decent groupset on it that will last then I would rather do that than buy a new bike and have an inferior set

Shimano

Shimano Deore M531 9 Speed Front Derailleur : £18
Shimano HG53 9 Speed Chain : £11
Shimano Deore M510 STI 9 Speed Trigger Shifter Set : £40
Shimano XT M770 9 Speed Cassette : £30
Shimano LX M585 Hydraulic Disc Brake Lever Set :£55

£154

A bit left over for your headset.

You could change to SRAM but you would need different shifters, chain and rear derailleur to the above.

thanks for that

where did you source the parts from?

im assuming my rear deraileur work with 9 spd?

is the M770 XT 9-speed Rapidfire Pods £44.99 better than your suggestion ?

ahh just noticed M510 STI is a gear & brake combo

Deore STI and LX Brake lever set SDK^?
Go for Sram Attack over Deore Shifters £20 from Chainreaction.
Also if you keep your current front rings they will be for 8 speed chains and so the shifting will be poor. You will either have to replace the chainrings with 9 speed rings or get a new chainset altogether.

yeah thats one of the reasons why I wanted a full groupset replacement

this is one set I have seen http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=30135 for £180 but its V brakes - the same set with hydraulic discs would be perfect

For 9 speed Shimano:

Deore
LX
SLX
XT
XTR < top of the range

Not including Hone and Saint that are at the LX point

Deore will be a huge jump from Alivio. :)

The LX kit is only £30 more so I may go for that, going to phone them and clarify exactly what is in the set and what parts I may be able to change

I really want to keep the big chainring at 48t if possible

Alivio is that bad huh?

how does this sound so far?

Shimano XT M770 9 Speed Cassette : £30
Shimano M532 Deore Chainset & BB 48/36/26, BLACK - 170mm : £47.99
Shimano HG53 9 Speed Chain : £9
Shimano XT Front Derailleur Conventional M761 : £16.99
Shimano LX Shifter Pod 9sp M580 set : £30

needs the rear deraileurs but theres quite a few variations and I'm not sure what I need

also need the levers

might leave the brakes for now

For me, I would drop the XT stuff and put (S)LX/Deore kit on. I have loads of XT and even the odd bit of XTR kit on my MTB, mainly because it look really nice :) anything above Deore level kit works really well, XT and above for me sacrifices durability for performance. For a commuter, stick with Deore/LX.

Alivio isn't bad, its just a big jump in performance to Deore.

What you have specced so far looks good. The Deore chainset should last a while.

The length of rear mech depends on the range of gears you have. I always use medium length but the more XC race minded may use long or extra long rear mechs. Medium will do you fine though - less mech to get hit by rocks. The new Shimano shadow mechs don't protrude as much as the regular mechs and are less likely to get snapped off in rock gardens etc...

ok heres my latest list of kit

Shimano XT M770 9 Speed Cassette : £26 ordered
Shimano M532 Deore Chainset & BB 48/36/26, BLACK - 170mm : £47.99 ordered
Shimano HG53 9 Speed Chain : £9 ordered
Shimano XT Front Derailleur Conventional M761 : £16.99 ordered
Shimano LX Shifter Pod 9sp M580 set : £30 ordered
Shimano LX M581 Rear Derailleur SGS long cage : £22 ordered

I think thats everything I need for the drive

anything wrong with that selection? any changes I should make?

any special tools I will need to buy?
(already have cassette socket & chain whip)

Do you really need a new chainset? I've got a set of XT cranks, and I personally just use Deore chainrings as they're steel, last forever, and cost pennies. Will your existing chainset not take Deore rings?

Also, try soaking the pivots on your front mech in a penetrating oil if it's perpetually stiff.

No other tools needed.

I'd also get a long cage mech - medium is fine for a double chainset, but you'd probably need long for a triple.

I'm not sure if the one I have on atm is interchangeable with other brands, besides its just a cheap set
I don't mind spending a few extra quid and getting a decent setup that shifts smoothly and is going to last me

Will I need any tools for changing the bottom bracket?

What about cables & protectors and the little crimps, will the levers or gears come with them?

I will look at the long cage deraileurs in the morning, bit too tired now :)

ok thats everything ordered bar cables and what not

just have to figure how to put it all together now, never done a job this big before

arghh , ordered the wrong size front derailleur, should be the smaller clamp

I've emailed the place (chain reaction) but no reply and my order hasn't changed and I can't get through on the phone

anybody used them before? are they known to be hard to contact?

I haven't had any problems at all with them. I phoned them once for a warranty replacement and they were top notch.

I ordered stuff just last week and had it delivered the next day.
