Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Following on from a mate buying a Phantom 3 Adv last year, I decided I wanted in on this drone action and bought myself an Autel X-Star Premium.

I've only been out with it once so far (typically it got delivered the day Storm Doris blew in) but I'm certainly impressed so far. Roll on the better weather!

I'm struggling to understand why you would buy that over a Phantom.

So I decided to have a bit of fun and ordered some parts from Banggood to make my own Tiny Whoop clone. It will hopfully making flying the 250mm easier.

So I've got the following coming:

Eachine E010
Eachine TX01
Extra Props
Extra Batteries
(I'll 3D print a mount)

Now I wanted to be able to control this from my Flysky TH9X Transmitter so I've ordered a little Multiprotocol TX Module which I hope will work and it came to £48 in total :). (I already have to Eachine 007 googles)

I'll report back once it all arrives.

James.

I spent quite a while researching and reading up on the differences between the Autel and DJI Phantom models.

The X-Star camera seemed to be a little better, people had better support from Autel when compared to DJI, I liked the orange colour, prefer the design of the controller, came with a hard case, read of firmware issues with Phantoms (plus my friend moans about the number of updates that appear), got a good deal on one etc etc.

I paid £625 for the orange X-Star and £89 for a spare battery all brand new.

Oh my - just had a very nervous evening trying to find my Husban that had flown away! The wind was just too strong high up, and I couldn't get it down / back home - in the end it tumbled, lost GPS and flew away.

Luckily, it was still transmitting and I located it using GPS 192 meters away 6 meters up a tree. After about 30 minutes of trying I eventually got it down - just. Fortunately, it hadn't even broken a blade.

A less well learned - don't fly high in high winds.

Anyone here have any experience of the Walkera Rodeo F150 or the Eachine Wizard? Torn between the two as my first foray into FPV quads. Any other suggestions other than those two? Similar price points for both of them, both get good feedback but I'm open to suggestions. Budget is £200 approx. Currently flying a DJI Phantom 3 but when I meet up with the guys at my local Quad club, I keep getting a hankering for an FPV racer. :)

My mate has the wizard and apart from an initial faulty esc has been happy with it. I've not flown it but when we've been out it looks fine. Also more of a traditional design than the walkera so would likely make repairs/spares a lot easier. Obviously you could go self build if you are up for it and learn more - regardless, you'll end up soldering before long anyway

Is £200 your total budget or just for the quad? You'll end up spending a lot on a decent charger and lipo's so factor that in

Pretty much, yeah. I'm looking for something RTF and will initially fly LOS but pick up a used set of goggles from somewhere later.

Don't touch the Walkera 150, it's a piece of junk. My mate had one for review and he managed melt an arm off it (esc fire) TWICE!
However, the Wizard is excellent value and worth a purchase as a first model for sure.

Aye Wizard, Walkera is too branded up to the max.

You'll want at least four batteries, at say 3mins a flight on each battery (if that) you'll soon go through them. A better charger is also worth it so you can balance charge properly.

Ok, Wizard back at the top of my list. However the Robocat 270 has caught my eye. Comes in ARTF form which I'm sure the guys in the club will be willing to help out with as far as building the kit up goes. Think the Storm Tarot SRD uses the same frame and canopy.

I built a Robotcat for my father. While it looks pretty neat, it's a complete pig to build and work on.

I'd stick with a traditional e.g. wizard, form factor for ease of upgrade and repair

Edit: Don't get buyers paralysis on your first model. You will end up building another before long and your £200 budget is going to be passed very quickly once you start even buying batteries, chargers, props (I mean, if you are paying/waiting for postage - who just buys props?)

It is a great hobby
It is an expensive hobby

Well just bumped in to the bloke near me who keeps flying around the houses. Politely pointed out its illegal and that there are plenty of other places nearby he could fly.
He just stood and said 'so what'.

I wouldn't personally go over a 250, anything over that and it's just big.

Just shouldn't fly near houses, end of. Or if you do, make sure they are aware of it.

So over the weekend I decided to delve into the really simple side of quadcopters, so I purchased a JJRC H36 from Amazon on Saturday. It arrived on Sunday and I had some fun with it outside the front of my house, until one of the motors started smoking! So it's going back to Amazon. I've picked up a replacement, but if I was looking to spend a bit more (this was around £18) and get something better, what would my options be? I've tried searching on Amazon and it's just full of different brands (all the same by the look of it) with total price ranges as well. If I was going to put down around £30 - £50 on one, which would people recommend as a good starting point? I enjoyed what I managed to get out of the JJRC H36 when I used it on Sunday. It was a pretty responsive little unit. The protection on the rotors is great as well, as it means that I don't really have to worry too much when learning because the rotors are protected (from bumps, not a burned out motor!).
