Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Unsure if to get a F550 or Phantom 2!

Not had a copter before, will be my first. I don't really have a massive interest in building one but will with the help of friends if its worth doing so with the F550.

Any help appreciated, however I do like the look of the Phantom 2!

I recently opted to buy the F550 kit and an F450 frame kit. From the combination of parts you have this then allows you to build both (one at a time obviously!) for only about £30 more than buying the F550 by itself.

Just ordered a Phantom 2 Vision. Been looking at one for a while and altho people suggested getting a normal version and adding a camera and lipo batteries I havent the patience to do this, just want to buy and fly.

All being well Ill get it tomorrow and flying over the weekend, weather permitting.

Anyone got any tips for this machine?? Ive read that there's a switch somewhere which changes the distance from 300 meters to 500 meters. Not sure if its an american thing or not (different frequencies etc), but an extra 200 meters should be good :)

There is a pot inside the transmitter you can turn (I think it's bottom right), you will need to open it up though. I've seen one on youtube go to 1.4KM stock. Double check on google though.

Without FPV I would forget this anyway as you would lose the thing...

Never had a problem with Phantom, just calibrate compass whenever you goto a flying location.. and never fly from where you are until you get the GPS lock followed by home position set (rapid green flashing light)

Thanks for the info Flukester. Im not on Facebook but I can still view the pages, thankfully.

Ive looked at the youtube videos and it is very impressive. I cant wait for the thing to arrive - I'm like a kid at christmas :)

Phantoms are pussycats compared with any Heli or Hubsan X4... really REALLY easy to fly.

My mate here flew mine after mastering Hubsan X4 and that was his only RC experience.

As long as you are in GPS mode with GPS lock it does all the hard work for you so if you lose orientation just let all the control center and it will sit there on the spot. Then take your time and bring it back.

Worst comes to worst you have the intelligent orientation controls to bring you home (not sure if this is enabled by default in config)

I've not enabled IOC controls because I need to RTFM a bit more, I've seen reports of RTH GPS lock being inadvertently changed when using it so I'm cautious about that until I know what I'm doing! Just got in my head what to do if things seem to be acting strangely. :D

Anyhow, yes, the Phantom 2 is super easy to fly. My 11 year old nephew had no worries flying it at all at the weekend! :D

I'm still struggling to find a gimbal that will work with a Mobius camera (super cheap!) and fit on the P2. I would go for the Zenmuse but at the moment the reports of GoPros turning their WiFi on by themselves make me nervous - I mailed GoPro support and asked them if they'll be putting an option in anytime soon to permanently disable WiFi.

Damn i missed a load of posts here,no email notifications :(.

Been working on a custom build this week using plans from one of the guys in rcgroups.

I cut the main body out of 3mm plywood, the arms are 10mm x 10mm square carbon tubing.

Frame weight : 100g

Motors : Dji/emax 925kv
Flight controller : kk2.0
Esc : Hobbyking blue 20 amp (simonk flashed)
Battery : zippy compact 5000 mah 4s
Props : rctimer 9x5 carbon fibre

Flying time = 19:30 minutes

Thats mixed flying racing around like a maniac and some gentle
figures of eight,no hovering at all.

Its a cracking little frame that folds up very small and flight times are great due to it being so light, she will take 10" props too.

These guys make a gimbal for the mobius, not sure how you could fit that to a phantom, must be a way though.

The two bolts in the middle are a bit tighter than the outer one's.

Friction keeps it in place and it works great,if setup right they wont budge at all, though if you get it wrong they may just fold in flight lol.

Actually its very solid takes a lot of force to fold the arms inwards.

If anyones interested the plans are free, you can get them from this thread:

Its a great frame, very cheap to make and easy too.

Looks really good pazza. Had so much fun modding the Phantom for work that I'm really tempted to build a leisure/non-camera carrying drone in my spare time.

Aye its great, its hard to tell from the picture how small it is when folded up,the props are 9" about the length of the frame.

Great for sticking in a backpack or sports bag,it will carry a gopro for 15+ minutes fpv too.

Shes ready!!! well nearly

She's nearly ready! its taken me what feels like a lifetime but she is ready! :D
the only thing left to do is balance her I think. a few questions though;
Easiest way to balance? Ive tried the string method (screw in CG) but due to the string not being in the centre of the screw i dont know how accurate it is. i picked her up by the screw with my fingertips, shes. abit nose heavy so ill move the battery forward a tad.
Centering the KK Board (in Receiver Test): Ive altered my sub-trims so all the values in the Receiver Test are at 0.

Is that the correct way to do it?

Just have to balance her and velcro the battery and cut the motor shafts.
Now for some pictures ;)

improvised legs! need to get thicker zip ties as they are a bit too small.

pazza; lovely little h quad! does she do acro? is that a 3s 2200mah?

Which software are you using on your KK board ?

I haz Multirotor Mail :D

Going to give this super budget HK FC a go, $6USD

Light 2200mah 3s lipos, Turnigy Plush 18a ESCs, various servo wires, props, heatshrink, silicon wire, bullet connectors etc

More DT750s. I pranged 2 of my last ones :( But gives me the chance to have a go at shaft replacement

These spare booms were in the boot of my car since June/July and were a bit warped. Hoping a little while lashed together will sort them out. If not they are only 79p each :)

I think the props I ordered are too small! :D

Yes subtrims or trim until they are all near zero, mine are never far off if the boards level

To find the cog i just lift the craft up either side (one finger each side) trying to make sure there inline with each other, move them back or forward and you will soon find the cog.

No thats a 5000 mah 4s battery underneath for long filight times, with a 2200 4s she will do flips and rolls easily, very agile.
