Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I just bought a crashed DJI Phantom FC40 today for £50! I'd seen a few crash over last few days. I been watching eBay, newly listed, distance nearest first, Gumtree, Facebook.

Blaged it with a 2 extra battery's. Needs new props, landing gear and the case. Everything else is fine. I've bought all the new parts with a higher landing gear for £30 inc a sticker sheet.

Nothing had been configured or set-up. I even got the box :) Will fix it up once all the parts are here and maybe flog it to diddums for £100

Fixed :D

Got a Hubsan X4 for Christmas and believe I have calibrated the tx and gyros but I finding that it pans right and forward much more willingly that going left or backwards? It hovers happily in one place but doesn't go evenly left and right / forward and back. Any suggestions?

Put the trims to center and calibrate again. You might need to add sheets of paper or a credit card to lift one side up so the X4 thinks its central.

This might help.

Is it possible that a wifi connection/signal between my go pro camera and phone with go pro app running interfered with the Tx/Rx combo on my quad?

One very broken quad - flew great on first proper test flight outside in big open area. However after adding my go pro - flew great as well, and then I turned on the go pro app to adjust some settings from my phone. (go pro + phone hook up as if they are on the same wifi signal)

quad took off fine but within about 20 seconds something wasn't right and quad started to take on a mind of it's own, spin round and then flying off, and about 10 seconds later drop out the sky!

It certainly wasn't out of range as I had flown further before with it. Anyway - surveying the damage doesn't look good! (landed upside down).

At least 3 broken props, a few bits of soldering and despite being inside the quad, the KK board screen has come off so that looks done too!! Ouchy.

Looks like video didn't happen for some reason either!

Yes for sure, don't use GoPro WIFI during model flight, both your control TX/RX and GoPro WIFI use 2.4GHz and with both so close together it's not a good idea. Never change GoPro settings during flight via phone or be tempted to use phone as cheap FPV..... for FPV you need another frequency like 5.8GHz and a dedicated way of viewing it like a ground station, TX mounted screen or Goggles.

yeah - this is what happened for sure! Silly billy!

However - new props £10 (4 sets) and only a new KK board new screen (£6) seems to be the only damage - back up and running soon! (not bad as it was about 200ft when it started to plummet and left a fair size hole in the football field!

Hi

I got a hubsan x4 for Christmas, not quite on the level of some of the quadcopters on here. Lol
I'm wondering if it's safe to charge the battery from wall mains using a phone charger with a USB connection.
It's a bit of a pain having to turn on the computer to charge it every time via the USB slot.

Thanks

@mark66 have you tried charging from wall mains at all, luckily I have a Samsung phone charger that has a USB connection but I'm unsure if it's safe.

Managed to get some flying in with the 250, ripped the vTx antenna off though trying to fly under some goalposts. Flew with the rest of my batteries with no antenna and still got a good 20m of range which was surprising

Flew again today with an antenna attached and had a right blast zipping around, it is just so fast! No major crashes but a few hard landings with no real damage

Itching to get out again now!

So having not actually received my Q4 nano copter i have been watching some vids and looking into the hobbie while im bored and i came across these men flying quads with these strange closed face goggles on, what is this i asked my self, i must investigate!

So now 24 hours later i am aware of this fantastically awesome looking feature of fpv flight :eek: this looks insane, it makes me want to spend lots of money just to try it out. I actually can't think of anything else that sounds more appealing than strapping a camera to the front of a air craft and zipping around feet from the floor.

what would be the set up cost for this, looked briefly at some fpv 250 class frames at hobbyking with a section for all the components and with a brief though maybe not completely compatible set-up (limited knowledge) got a shopping cart of £155 for the unit itself and a transmitter, then the price of a fat shark predator v2 rtf kit and camera at 170ish, so a ballpark of £330. Does this sound like a reasonable set up cost or is this the very low end and not worth touching?

here is what i threw together, bearing in mind this is just a bit of fun to see what it would cost if i enjoyed the q4 to move to the bigger units.

the cart i assembled

That looks ok, don't forget you'll need a Lipo charger as well

You've listed 3 props there as well? You'll only need 2 sets, one pair of CW and one CCW. Buy plenty of spares though!

Another thing to note is that the 12A Afro ESC's don't have a BEC so you'll need a UBEC to power the KK board

Also, don't ever buy anything on back order from Hobbyking. You're better off finding something in stock. I'm using zippy compact batteries on my 250 and they seem to be pretty good

Yeah my Naza (along with all the other electronics) is held down with velcro - there's just enough room for adding in a few extras like the H3-3D PMU and the iOSD mini etc but it's a mess of wires in there now haha

I'm not finding the FPV feed from the Fatshark Pilot HD V2 to be that bad actually although as soon as it gets near sunset the image quality just goes to pot which is a shame but it'll be fine in summer with full on high up sunshine.

haha good luck, mine started off that way now she is a rats nest of wires. I'm taking top plate off later this week so will take a photo of the horror beneath :)

Nice. What camera and TX do you get with that? As its £630

I guess if you were to buy just the BNF version you would need to get a TX, camera and Gimbal yourself - plus whatever gimbal parts are required if any

350 BNF - £235
TX - Spektrum DX8 - £205
Go pro Hero - £100
Gimbal - ???
