Mum had sex with son

Wasn't it Sigmund Freud who said that we all want to sleep with our mothers? :o

After a bit of a read up, it appears that according to Freudian theory, girls especially have desires to her mother and later her father during the phallic stage of phsycosexual development. This desire then shifts to men in general via the defence mechanism of displacement.

Interesting stuff, if put in the proper context.

Most of that Freud stuff was disproven/dismissed though. It's just quoted a lot because it's famous and bought psychology forward as a science.

Not my words - my brothers. He's doing Neuroscience so I guess he knows what he's saying :p

There is a lot of controversy, no doubt, but it's very diffcult to disprove most of Freud's work.

Playing devil's advocate. Why is it just wrong?

2 reasons primarily.

The first is the risk of genetic problems, while any couple have some risk it is magnified when the relationship is much closer.

Secondly, and probably the more important one, it is to protect the children. In the majority of cases where incest occurs it is in reality an abusive relationship. While you could not say this is the case in all such relationships it is very hard to legislate on grey areas so in this case a blanket ban is probably the best approach.

When the two reasons are taken togther this is why incest is considered wrong in most cultures.

Yeah I guess that's the way with psychology though, they're all theories and you'd probably find a lot of theory's are hard to disprove.

It's probably one of those bandwagon things you get in most sciences - you have one group who believe this, and one group who believe that. And the group of crackheads who believe Freud.

:p

But seriously, I don't think he's right. I'm not qualified to say he's wrong, but I reckon there are more "sensible" theories around that don't involve me wanting to murder my dad, sleep with my mum, etc.

I could talk more to my brother about it but he's being a Dungeon Siege addict right now so I won't disturb him ;) You'd probably just find his field of science is in the anti-Freud bandwagon.

thats just wrong!

To think of at as some of you mentioned, 7 kids! and un-employed, chances are shes on full benefits, now how much do they get PER child on a yearly basis, plus un-employment benefits plus whatever else?
