Muslim woman wearing veil 'refused bus ride' in London

Once again the level of irational fear of Muslims on OcUk is high. Please at least look at the little slide show on Muslim head scarves and educate yourselves slightly.

In winter I often walk around with a scarf over my mouth and nose, hat pulled down, basically only showing my eyes. As far as I'm aware no one has ever been in "fear" of me not showing my face.

It's not discrimination. They entered a london bus, not a bloody mosque.

Anyway, discrimination is not a one way street.

But you wouldn't have to take your balaclava off or motorcycle helmet off. It's only a bus not a balaclava or motorcycling convention.

Unless it extends to all items that cover the face how the hell is it not picking on muslims????????????

I can understand it for reasons of safety perhaps, but even that is ********. Care to show me the stats for number of crimes committed in burkhas?

and if it is indeed security then it should extend to all types of face covering clothing.

reading this forum makes me want to be a terrorist.

Did you read that old article I linked? Why is it ok for muslims to be intolerant of the name of a building or even the shape of it just because if they turn their head sideways or they stand on their heads they can find some reference to islam, but everyone else should show 110% tolerance to muslims? It's called give and take.

really? thats a bit extreme...

bu anyway i thought in some countries that you as a woman, or maybe a male, were not allowed to show your shoulders, or legs for instance.

this is their culture of modesty and covering up.

in this country the culture is about openness of facial features and expression.

i dont understand why people cannot understand that our culture is just as important to us, despite being the inverse of the arab cultures.

Question: Why always refer to the women as 'Muslim Women'?

You don't see people referred to as 'Christian Women' do you?

if it was about a driver refusing a lift for wearing a crucifix then yes it would be labelled Christian woman.

The fact they are Muslim is pretty integral to the story, it's the only thing that differentiates it from the thousands of "person refused bus ride unless they lowered hood!"

As far as I'm aware and have had Muslims tell me the same. The actual full-face veil carries no religious significance. The head-scarf is a religous garment for women. However the the full-face veil extends back many, many years ago in the times where Kings ruled etc and the purpose the veil served was to prevent other men eyeing up there women.

I was under the impression that the Niqab was a cultural dress not an Islamic dress? Which is why not all Muslims wear one?

Same as a crucifix then?

The fact it she wears it as part of her religion (there are different interpretations and different sects, some consider it part of the religion) is what makes it a story as if it's a religious item it's a vague grey area and the result could be interesting, if it was just a face covering it would have no legal protection (and the religious one may not either but that's the whole point of the story) and it couldn't go anywhere.
