Must have something on in the background to get to sleep! - Anyone else?

I use to sleep better with my PC on, the hum helped me sleep, and blocked out the noises on the road...

Sadly my housemate complained at me for leaving it on all the time so I had to get use to sleeping without it... Now I just wake up all the time to random noises :(

The only time I've had this was years ago when I worked nights. If I left the radio on low it blocked out most of the daytime noise such as traffic etc

My youngest daughter has always been bad for this and she leaves a light on and the TV all night.
Strangely she doesn't do it in her room that she shares with another student at Uni.

And when at a festival I slept through a guy playing a guitar above my head for several hours. (Wasn't drunk :P)

My wife can beat that.
In 1979 we were watching Motorhead at the Victoria Hall, Hanley and I turned around and she was fast asleep.
I've never let her forget it.

I can cope with traffic and general hubub of city life. But if there's a ticking clock near me I go insane :o

Ideally I'd prefer a pitch black absolutely dead quiet room with no so much as noise as that of my own breath.

So no I don't need anything to go to sleep, quiet is bliss for me, but I cope without it.

Yea I can't sleep without the TV being on. If I just lie there in silence I start to think loads because I'm bored, which just keeps me up. Just use a sleep timer. Windows has one built in.

Put this in a text document and save it as forcetimedown.bat

Code:
shutdown -s -f -t 7200
exit

7200 represents the seconds till shutdown which is 2hrs here.

I made an mp3 which was played on loop - a mix of thunderstorm and pink noise. Helped a treat but don't seem to need it anymore.

That's me, even my girlfriend breathing is too loud some times so I head into the spare room. That said I'll happily listen to the wind or rain if I'm trying to get to sleep.

Wife likes having the radio on, which is fine but if it's even a tiny bit too loud I get woken up at 00:45 by that bloomin "Sailing away" tune they play before the shipping forcast on Radio 4 ! Or some random african music at 3-4am.

My CPAP machine helps me sleep, the sound the mask makes is a tad like white noise, but in the past I prefered silence.

I've had this 'issue'

Also, because I'm always leaving stuff playing on my laptop to get to sleep, my laptop ends up turning itself off due to the battery completely running out. Is this bad for the laptop?

Set your laptop to turn off after an hour or whatever.

Same here, I remember when I went into the ER ward at hospitable, it was chaos and noisy but I slept like a baby, but then when I was put in a regular ward it was so quiet that I could barely sleep, I grew up in noisy towns and city's though so I'm not sure if that contributes towards this problem or not, I live on a main road now which helps, hearing the traffic pick up in the morning usually sends me to sleep.

The sound of rain outside sends me right to the land of nod.

Same here, I have a CD that is the sound of rain that I put in if I find it hard to sleep.

I've slept through being blown up twice in Basrah (genuinely sleep like I'm dead) but in the UK a ticking clock can keep me up for hours! I usually like some noise (tv/radio) but wake up after 3-4 hours to turn if off. Rain is the best thing I've known for knocking me out stone cold, even during the evening like 7-8pm if it starts raining I'm out like a light :D
