Must Own Books?

I know that was quite a sweeping statement but it is usually true.

(Also I am a philip K Dick fan, so I will have to disagree with you there).

Usually, perhaps. However, you italicised and bolded never. Ergo you 100% believe the accuracy of the statement else why would you do it?

Dick is a good author, but Androids won't ever measure up to Bladerunner.

In fact, having thought about it (and not wanting to derail the thread) I can think of plenty of films better than the books.

Bladerunner
Jaws - as mentioned by gjrc
Star Wars
The Pianist
To Kill a Mockingbird
Forrest Gump
Shawshank Redemption

I am Legend - Richard Matheson (soon to be Hollywood-ised)
The Shrinking Man - Richard Matheson
Domain - James Herbert
Thief of Time - Terry Pratchett (although you probably should read all the Discworld books!)

Actually I agree - my never was tantemount to me screaming it in your face to make a point - I just think generally that every book I have read that was made into a film never cut the mustard for me.

To kill a mockingbird better than the BOOK!?

I think we shall leave it Gilly, this will derail quite badly :p

I am Legend by Richard Matheson, but be quick as Will Smith is about to murder the story with his latest film.

1984 by Orwell, don't need to say anything bout this.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck, I'm currently reading this and its fantastic. In fact I don't think I've ever read a less than fantastic Steinbeck novel with Grapes of Wrath and of Mice and Men being standouts.

Also anything by James Ellroy, George Pelecanos, David Peace..... I could go on and on

Only one mention so far for Dickens ........ each to their own I suppose...... anyway, I'd say any of his books sould be part of your collection.

I think the archaic language puts people off.

It's a nice break from Milton :p

Iain M. Banks - Culture Novels.

Best of the bunch being:

Player of Games
Consider Phlebas
Look to Winward
Use of Weapons
Excession

Others:

Alice in Wonderland
Alice Through the Looking Glass

Two of my fave books ever.

For non-fiction:

Q.E.D. (The Strange Theory of Light and Matter) - Richard Feynman

One of the best 'science' books i've ever read, Feynman is a superb writer and some of the stuff in this book will blow your mind :D

Theres loads of other books, but you know how it is, you can never remember when you want to!
