Must Own Books?

Micheal Cordy - Venus Conspiracy and the Lucifer Code
I enjoyed those books too.

I'd recommend:

The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth (also better than the film).

Anything by Harlan Coben

The majority of Michael Crichton's books - I thought that Timeline was far superior to the film however Jurassic Park film > the book

must own books should include James Clavell - shogun, Tai Pan and King Rat specifically.

his dark materials trilogy - phillip pullman

Add Noble House to the James Clavell list, an awesome series of books.
The Dark Matters Trilogy is also extremely good!

I agree The Dark Matters books are good, even though only read the first one as i cannot find the 2nd one in the cover i have. I'll say the first one is a very good book.

He's got a new one out soon. I've read Consider Phlebas, Player of Games and Use of Weapons so far, I'm going to read Excession next.

Yup, very much looking forward to it.

Excession is excellent, very different from the others.

Look to Winward is a kind of sequel to Consider Phlebas and is probably the least 'cryptic' and normaly written on of his books, its a great read.

Ones I wasn't keen on:

Fearsum Endjin -- Went on and on, nothing much really happened

Against a Dark Background -- Good Story, but man is it depressing! Darkest of any of his books by far, worth reading once though. Couldn't have picked a more apt name!

The State of the Art -- Great title, not so good book. Lots of short stories, only one or two are good, rest are decidably average.

I'd have to say my fave book is The Player of Games, with Excession and Look to Winward close second.

Garth nix - abhorsen series is also very good pretty much on par with Phillip Pullman and his Dark Materials Trilogy.
