Hi all

Have decided in the summer before Uni, in my spare time, I want to read lots of classic and well regarded books. However, I don't really know that many, so... anyone care to list a few titles to get me started?

Currently have Catcher in the Rye, Silence of the Lambs and American Psycho out from the library, among other less well known books.

Cheers :)

Animal Farm and To Kill a Mockingbird definitely added to the "read soon" pile, others noted. :)

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The Art of War by Sun Tzu
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne

... are all books I haven't read, but think I ought to. Actually I have read Great Expectations, but only because I was forced to due to GCSE English Lit.

To save myself retyping my shortlist and because there are lots of good suggestions in there, a must read thread from a couple of months back.

//edit scorza the latter three are definitely great books although I've not read the first two myself either yet.

The Godfather - Absolutly amazing book, goes into so much more detail about the life of the mafia and it was fascinating.

Marching Powder - A biography about a man kept in a Boleese prison for smuggling drugs. I won't say any more but you HAVE to read it, i was shocked and amazed.

Anything from Hunter S. Thompson. I preffered Fea and Lothing as a book to the film, and i also think Rum Diary is a good read.

The Road - An epic epic book. Not long, and not hard to read, just amazing.

Oh also, 'The Boy in Stripped Pyjamas'. Very much like The Road, short and brilliant. Was recommeneded by my dad and i loved it.

'Band of Brothers' by Stephen E. Ambrose. A different insight to the D-Day landings than the series, and you get more character biogrpahy if you wanted more information.

Not wanting to start an arguement here but can I ask why you like this series?

Each to their own and everything but I found it painfully tedious to read, it was like a childs book "this happens, then that happens, then this happens, then that happens, then this happens et all"

There was no real development of anything in the book. I had it recomended to me by a friend who reads (almost) as much as me and couldn't beleive how poor it was, considering he was the bloke who got me into Robert Jordan and George R Martin, which on topic I would massively recomended to you OP. Pick up the first in both these series and you will be completely hooked!

As I say not looking for an arguement would just like to know what you personally enjoyed so much about the series?
