Mustang

These modern yank muscle cars have recently joined my list of cars I must own at some point. The only problem I have with the Stang is they 'standard' ones looks crap imo, whatever spec that one is and GSXRMovistar's is looks superb, and ofcourse Gibbo's was stupendously good looking (imo).

I love the new Camaro aswell, woof woof.

I cant believe how many people on here seem to have or have owned a Mustang! are they an expensive car to own?

It depends.

MPG is pretty poor as can be expected.

Servicing can be very cheap as simple engines and hardly anything ever goes wrong because they are big undertuned engines and put under such little stress.

Do 20k a year in one and I'd imagine it would cost a bit, but no more than a 3 litre BMW.

MPG's not that poor, why do people always say that? These aren't 2 litre coupes at the end of the day :)

Wrong, I had an average of 26MPG this weekend on a longish drive up to Norfolk (and I was being rather spritied)

Even the factory ratings are in the region of 20 urban, 30 motorway - and people seem to exceed that on a regular basis.

I seem to remember that even Gibbo got good economy when his was cranking out the right side of 500BHP....

Even the factory ratings are in the region of 20 urban, 30 extra-urban - and people seem to exceed that on a regular basis.

On my test drive I averages 16MPG, that was about 30minutes of driving and only about 5 minutes of that was spent really testing the engine, the rest was normal town driving.

16MPG to me is the same sort of MPG you get in some supercars!

20k at 16MPG is gonna cost a bit.

I've not owned one yet though but going on how my test drive went I always factored in fuel to be one of the most expensive running costs in the car.

That's hardly conclusive though is it :) Trip computers aren't the be-all-and-end-all at the end of the day and well, was it reset at the start of the trip? Would it have continued increasing if you'd kept on driving? Was it a hot day? Was there lots of stopping and starting? Was it a manual or an automatic? So many variables. Hell, I could take a 2 litre car and get 10 around town if I tried (but that is pushing the point a bit)!

16mpg is pretty much what every four door saloon with a moderate engine will tend to do if you're driving through town, brim to empty....Hell, a 2.5 litre Mondeo has a factory rating of 20mpg urban!

A supercar would return a lot LESS than 16mpg in the same conditions. For example a Ferrari 360 has factory ratings of 9.4mpg for urban driving......and that's a relatively 'sane' car!

So, in short, no, they're good on fuel, especially when considering what they are :D

amazing looking car, shame about the interior.

Interiors are easily changed ;)

The Cobra was a replica that I built, sold it because I didn't use it, either too hot cold or wet, without a roof you get sunburnt, frozen or soaked, with a roof they're so cramped!

Mustang mpg is not much of an issue, my Evos used to do 20+, the Cobra 10+ :D

That mpg isn't bad at all for a V8, Modern engine at the end of the day so far more econimical than an old carb'd v8
My 350z will only give me 20-25mpg around town and 30-35 motorway. I've even seen as low as 18

Nice to see you had a proper chevy engine in that cobra and not a rover v8!
Same engine my uncle had in his kit cobra many moons ago and with the side pipes the sound was incredible :D I presume it was around the 5 litre mark?

I love old mustangs but must admit I have a soft spot for the new ones too. I just don't think I could put up with LHD. You can get a lot of car for your money though and with a bit of tweaking to the suspension here and there they handle pretty well. It's certainly something I would like to say I've owned once in my life :)

I bet you can't wait now!

Of course I can wait, I am the most patient person in the whole world - NOT.

The chevy was a 350 cu inch about 5.7l. 355 bhp and measured 99db at SVA, the I replaced the 2" baffles with 3" ones :) The Mustang sounds liek an electric car in comparison but I'm sure that will change over time

Hi there

Its great to see people buying real cars on this forum. :D

Anyway there is no point is saying what to look for etc. as you have made your purchase, very nice example as well I might add. :)

Mod wise, well do you want handling, 1/4 mile ability or somewhere in between?

The must do modifications are:-

1. Get an SCT Tuner with some base tunes for Octane 93+ fuel, this gives about 30BHP / 30Lb/Ft but vastly improves throttle response - Cost circa £350-£500 delivered.
2. Get some Tokico D adjustable shocks and Roush Springs, it will absolutely transform the handling - Cost £500ish delivered (Steeda.com)
3. Get an adustable panhard rod and brace - £250 Delivered, centres the rear axle and gives it a more planted feeling.
4. Front and rear anti-roll bars, again Steeda best parts, reduces body roll vastly, really plants the rear. - About £400 Delivered.
5. Steeda adjustable lower control arms and upper control arm, prevents wheels hop, much improve traction of the mark. - £250 delivered.
6. Front lower and upper braces, again Steeda, about £150 delivered.

The above will absolutely sort the handling towards BMW M3 levels, well worth the money, you can go further but its best to do bit by bit, as wheels/summer tyres plus decent brakes are good options too.

Then for exhaust, well it HAS TO BE LONG TUBE HEADERS, all the way, then you have your COBRA noise, plus with remap you will be looking at around 365BHP and 370Lb/Ft. :D

Any more questions just ask. :D

P.S. OH MY this is my first official post on the forum since been back and its about Mustangs. :D

I've just booked one of these for 16 days as a hire car, I hope it's decent, a 2011 V6 would be nice (301bhp) but knowing my luck it'll be a 2010 :( Or a Sebring

The engines in the 2011 cars are something else, they really are quite amazing. :)

I think I will find myself purchasing a 2011 Stang within the next 24 months as I want that engine and want to see if I crack 500BHP N/A from it. :D

Thanks for that Gibbo and welcome back :)

Still getting used to the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing and vice versa. Spent the day polishing it :D
