No; if I am not sure of something then I tend to say things like 'I think...' or 'I suspect...' and so on. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you have used no such qualifications or caveats in this case.

I said I found the comments to be pretentious and snobbish.
I am sure a superior linguist such as yourself understands that when someone says they "find" something to be a particular way" they are offering their opinion not stating it as fact.

How did I know this thread was going to go this way
Well it is simple.
I offer an opinion such as "in my limited experience of the Independent newspaper it is not politically independent" and like bees around a honeypot you can be sure that Arcadefire / Visage / RichL or robmiller will tell me I am wrong.
It appears to be one of lifes little certainities.
They appear to feel a need to try and score points over anything I post.
I think they suffer VIRIIphobia :) I have no idea why after all some of them have stated that they believe that they are superior people ....

I forgot to mention the debate will always end with "VIRII you are wrong and if you can't even accept that you might be wrong....."
Strange how they never entertain their own fallibility, comes with being superior beings I suppose....

I would HAVE thought that someone would HAVE picked up on the difference between "imply" and "infer" by now ......... tut, tut! ;)

For whatever it is worth I've used obsfuscate a few times in 'ordinary' conversation but not mutable unless I was working on a particular technical problem that required it. I would however say that I'd be more likely to use either in a written document than a conversation simply because writing (e.g. for a uni essay) means that you have a word limit and the more exactly you convey your meaning the better, subtle nuances can be expressed to the reader. Conversation also involves judgement however in 'pitching' it at the right level, some people will fail to comprehend my meaning if I use an 'obscure' word even if it communicates the precise implication I want so rather than use it and then have to explain I will make the decision to simplify my vocabulary to make it easier for all involved.

Incidentally my vocabulary selection depends as much on how I'm feeling as any other extraneous factors. :)

Serious question or not? It means a word that is literally a foot and a half long. :)
You know me I don't know "long" or "big" words ....... ;)

From earlier ....

"long" words?
You can use words that are as long as your arm.

The point was OBSCURE words...... don't you understand the term "obscure" because 4 times now you've replaced "obscure" with "big".......

Not at all - I just think that it's good to correct people when they have misconceptions about something. If you see that as picking on you then I'm very sorry.

I'm perfectly happy to entertain the possibility that I'm wrong - in fact I pride myself on it. I don't think that I am wrong in this case (else I wouldn't still be here) but I'm happy to be shown otherwise. It's just that all you've offered so far is your insistence that (1) we're all out to get you, and (2) we only use long words to make ourselves appear intelligent. I know that neither of those are true in my case, and I suspect that they're not true in everyone else's case, because we'd all have to lead very sad lives indeed to be excited by the prospect of point-scoring on the internet.

Correction would require facts yet in your case it amounts to you believeing that your opinions are correct and those who disagree are wrong. The very thingyou accuse me of infact.
