MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

Getting the itch for another MX5... Probably one someone has already boosted and tuned... A MK2.5 with a turbo perhaps...
But I don't want to sell my Crown... Decisions. :p

My mate (stupidly) stuck his turbo'd mk1 up for sale last week if anyones looking for a trackday ready toy

I.L. Motorsport chassis bracing and rear strut brace

Should feel like a different car, hopefully.

If your car is stock at the moment, these part will indeed transform the handling.

Good shout on upgraded pads. I fitted braided hoses, grooved discs and changed the fluid but stayed with OEM spec pads and the brakes quickly faded on my last Nurburgring trip. I'm going with EBC blue stuff next time.

When they do the gearbox oil, it would be a good idea to also get them to oil the turret and grease the ball on the bottom of the gearstick. Changing the oil in the gearbox did improve shifting, but doing the turret improved it further and now it's super smooth.

A few mods but the suspension is stock with very well worn bilsteins.

I don't think the EBC pads are well rated on MX-5s, you can choose between Mintex 1144, rodders, PBC pro track, carbotech etc.

i'll do the turret oil sometime in the winter and check the limiter plate/any bushings.

This makes me want to explore mods!

We have a specialist up the road from our workshop who really specialise in MX5s, turbo conversions and all that. Wouldn't know where to begin but may be something id consider in the new year :)

Has your car been cavity injected or had any kind of anti-rust treatment?

If not, that is absolutely the first mod I would do! Look into products from Bilt Hamber, Dinitrol and Lanoguard. You want to protect every single nook, cranny and cavity before the rust and moisture takes hold. Especially as yours looks like such a nice one!

Thanks for the comment, I do want to keep it on good shape.

It had been regularly treated by the previous owner up until a certain point I think. I got the impression that it was done early in its life for a while.

I'm semi joking about the turbo route, but I am curious. Part of me wants to keep it standard though :)

A hard top is something I really want but can't find any around here that haven't been on some car that's been abused really

Once you've had the car a while you get a feeling of what you want to improve and you can go from there.

When does winter storage normally start for the MX5 owners who haven't yet properly protected the underbelly of the vehicle and want to keep it out of the way of the grit? Or is it a case of common sense.. Just keep enjoying it until the first frost then time to shelf it until the spring?

For my mate it was always when they started gritting the roads. The weather itself isn't the issue, its mainly the salt.

Fortunately I treated my 5 and ran winter tyres. There was nothing better than top down driving on a sunny winters day

I'm sure man.. I wish I had done the same. I've got a while to go yet as I just bought a new set MPS4 a couple of months ago.

Anyway, at the moment I can only drive 5000miles due to my insurance, so that's also fine. It will hopefully give me time to clean and treat the underneath.

Thanks for the reply. I'll keeps an eye out for the grit lorries. That will be a good baseline.

Just use it, wash the underside. They rot sat in garages as well.
I probably will end up just doing that. I'm obsessed with the bloody thing. Hopefully going to start a new job soon which has a nice combo of B roads and A roads which means I can use it as my daily driver.. 25min each way. Should be good. :D

Mines my daily driver, and am going to be using it through winter (first winter with it)

I find the cab heats up really well, the blowers are really good imo. Plus the bum warming button will help. My commute is hardly long

I did want a hardtop but still struggling with finding one local that's also in a good way.

It's garaged every evening as is, so will keep that up but otherwise try not to think about it too much.
