MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

These exhaust and chip kits, are there any independent verifications of them increasing power by 10+hp? I've always been wary of that kind of thing on NA engines.

Plenty of dyno plots over on mx5nutz...

I had a racing beat 4-1 exhaust manifold and ecutek remap installed on my mk3 on friday (adding to the aem intake and milltek manifold back exhaust), initial impressions are very favourable. I havent got anything to scan the dyno sheet....but it made 154bhp on the before run and 174bhp after. This is with very draggy winter tyres on so paul roddisons reckons its down 3-5bhp on what it'd do with more normal rubber. A mk3.5 (09 plate onwards)will gain slightly more as the rev limit is higher and the cylinder head flows better.

The peak gains are not the be all and end all though, the throttle map is much better, much more responsive and it pulls harder through the gears. Away from the line or accelerating hard from lower gears its way more aggessive and much less lazy in its response. It sounds better, revs more freely and doesnt run out of puff at the top end. Its louder now but it still retains nice road manners, if my exhaust wasnt so noisy you could say it drives like a factory car just better...idle is smooth and theres no flat spots.

If you have the time to look for a car, I don't think it worth paying the extra money buy from him.

There are a few things that annoyed me specifically.

The one front wing where it meets the bumper had some paint bubble on that was repaired along with a few other bits of paint work before I got the car. 4 months after picking it up the paint bubble on the front wing is back.

The front pads were supposed to be changed before I picked the car up as he spotted they would need changing while doing something else. I don't thing they were changed as they need doing now.

The were a few other issues but I'm not sure they could have been spotted.

Thanks for that. I thought he was one of the good ones since he meticulously describes the car to you on the website.

I guess if you go visit him with your eyes open, you'll come to realise that the MX-5 is exactly what it is: a car that's over 20 years old, and a certain level of commitment is needed to keep it in shape.

Much appreciated.

His car will be better than most but if you're not in a rush and don't mind trawling through loads of adverts you should be able to find a decent mk1 for quite a bit less.

Sounds good, what sort of figure did you pay all in, if you don't mind me asking?

I paid £600 all in for the remap (which is a custom one done on a dyno) and fitting for the manifold. BBR may offer a cheaper solution with a standard remap - think their starchip will work out cheaper than what I had but is a more generic map.

I had some luck with the manifold itself - I bought a used one off a guy on mx5nutz, for £250, and had paul roddison keep it for me at his garage until I wanted it fitting. Now in the meantime paul was building a race car and needed a manifold for that, but was out of stock of new ones, and ended up using the second hand one as he was working to a deadline. Then he put aside a new one for me once he got stock again...but did not charge me any extra (the racing beat manifolds are normally £426). So I ended up with a brand new one for just 250.

It's not cheap (n/a tuning rarely is) but it really dials the car up a notch, before it always felt slow and a bit lazy to me (coming from a modified type r which had really good throttle response), now its a lot more urgent and that bit quicker too.

The manifold and remap is about the biggest performance increase you will get for these, if the cost seems steep but you want a bit more go then ignore any basic mods like air intake or exhaust backbox, you will gain very little apart from sound with both.

Picked up a hardtop for Mrs rjk's MX5 last night.

She found it on eBay and typed the number into her phone to message the seller about viewing. Turned out she knew the seller.

We couldn't tell from the pictures, but its the exact same colour as hers. Perfect condition, right colour match and working heated window.

Luckily, her car had the bolts and clamps in place to fit the hardtop.

She ended up paying £380, not sure if that's a bargain or not?

I've seen the hardtops selling from £400 up to silly prices so £380 seems quite a good price to me. Even more so given it's in exactly the right colour and your already had the fitting kit :)

Also, replaced the indicator bulbs in the headlights with some silvertec bulbs to remove the orange fried egg look.

That's got to be my next modification - I've never actually noticed until the other morning just how bad the orange bulbs look. The silvertec ones seem to tidy up the front nicely. :D

I posted back in July thinking about getting one, now looking again, I might get one just to make a change from owning a clio 1.2 for 4 years, and to tide me over while i'm saving for something with a bigger engine (IE Z4 3.0:D )

Saw this on the bay and its not far away, so might take a look at it.

Thoughts? Can't see the whole desc since half of the webpage is blocked due to our blocker in work :(

Looks ok in the pictures but if you're after a mk2 make sure you learn how to check the front chassis rails and the usually mx5 issues.

Might be worthwhile seeing if you can pick up a cheap endoscopic camera to check the insides of sills etc.

I dropped a quick email to the bloke, asking about rust, here's his response.

Hi the car is available. No rust it's a really nice example which needs to be viewed. For any further information please call.

I know I should take that with a pinch of salt, but could be a contender, he wants £3k for it, reckon £2.5k is a reasonable offer if all is well?

Hi there - I'm just wondering if any of you fellow MX5 owners could advise on tyres. I'm currently running Bridgestone 205/45 R 16 (83w) all round on my car but expect to be replacing them within the next six months or so.

My usual journey consists of part motorway and part B roads, while I don't expect to be going on track or racing any time soon, I'm of the opinion the more grip the better in a RWD car. Now I'm quite happy to replace them with another set of Bridgestones at £90.00 per corner I just thought I'd ask on here and see if anyone else could offer any suggestions to a better tyre?

the more i read this thread the more i want an mx5 :D

guess a silly time to buy now coming up to summer? best to buy in winter to get a bargain?

To be honest i don't think theres a huge swing in costs. They seem to hold their value quite well.

I'm potentially going to be starting to commute to work and i can't decide whether to do it in my 5 or whether i need something more comfortable. Being 6"3 its not the comfiest place for long journeys in a suit with my head touching the roof! Where in Manchester are you? You're more than welcome to have a go in mine if you want to get a feel for it.

I'm rusting on my arches. :(

Gonna run it until August, then whack on ebay with zero reserve as I'm off to London for a graduate job.

Remarkably reliable and cheap to run (bar awful fuel usage in city traffic). Making the mos of it while I have a few more months.

as i have been looking at these on the net, i notice more and more of these on the road

this week i have seen about 15 different ones and no word of a lie they have all been lady drivers

where are are all the male drivers hiding!

You can still get decent value this time of year. Prices are a little bit higher but not buy a huge amount.

There was a lovely mk1 on nutz last week for £1700 ish and looked to be a fantastic buy, if it was rust free as claimed and appeared to be in pics.

You'll struggle to find any better: http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=140349#entry1660067

It'll cost you though...

I missed this post from aaages ago. I like that... makes me feel that I didn't pay quite so much over the odds for my one as I first thought :p

Now that my one is back on leisure use only I love the thing again! I've neglected it a bit over the last year (not driven in winter though) so this summer it is getting a full under body clean up. Previous owner never even took it out in the rain... I've not been quite so precious :p

They are about, even more so now the sun is starting to hang around. One thing I have noticed is that a great deal of the lady owned/driven MK1's tend to be tatty as hell :(

Mine's just sailed through her MOT, a whopping £2,200 cheaper than last year. RESULT! :D Just need to get the bubbly O/S front wing sorted.
